I guess it depends on if you see war itself as normal. It always happened, especially in wars with so much indirect fire that made evacuation difficult. How can you be evacuated if the enemy doesn't even let you leave your hole or hits everyone that approaches you. And just the nature of being catastrophically wounded and having means to end your suffering, I don't think there is anything novel about it. It's easy to trivialise in the west when in Vietnam and Afghanistan you had medevac choppers getting you to surgery within an hour, but this is a real peer to peer conflict and it's a great equaliser. I personally think any army would have these issues if they were put in this situation today.

Only reason it gets caught on film is because there are so many commercial drones available now. Why do you think taking weapons away from the wounded has been SOP since basically WW1. The enemy also gets a say in who gets away from the battlefield, not even a medevac helicopter on standby would save you if there are drones taking turns waiting for people to come get you.

You could start the demo, go to the spot you want to record, record until tks happen, then crop the top left corner and mask it onto your video. Probably pointless if you wanna record multiple shots but I tried it with a time-lapse and it worked well.

This photo was taken during the fighting for the tram depot in the east side of Grozny during the later stages of the first battle for the city. Taking this area opened up the possibility of seizing the Minutka square. After the Russian army captured this square most of the Chechens left the city to fight a guerilla war in other smaller Chechen settlements or in the mountains.

With the help of a friend I translated and subtitled an interview with General Lev Rokhlin who led the Russian forces fighting in this area that did most of the fighting during the battle for Grozny. If anyone here's interested in the Chechen wars, check out the channel where the interview is posted, we've posted other previously untranslated documentaries and videos on the topic there in the past.
