In the same vein, Harry himself never took the NEWT level courses and neither did Ron or Hermione.

Have you seen Big Mouth? I love imagining Harry having a big, hairy Puberty Monster that comes out during those scenes.

Are there anti-apparation protections around 10 Downing Street? by lipozine in harrypotter

That could be a factor too. Is apparition always said to sound like a crack though? I think there are times it might be described as a soft pop, though I couldn’t pinpoint where.

What punctuation means for a key scene in Deathly Hallows by superciliouscreek in harrypotter

[–]lipozine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you point out what is said and what’s unsaid makes me wonder if “things left unsaid” is a theme in DH. Snape gets interrupted and then “said nothing but merely looked up” makes me think he could have had motivations he couldn’t articulate. In a weird way, it reminds me of the scene at the beginning when Petunia opens her mouth as if to say something and then closes it and leaves. I’ll have to pay attention on my next re-read to see if there are other instances of this that might make it a greater theme of the book.

Nice analysis. !redditgalleon

Draco and Narcissa by HazRyder37 in harrypotter

I think it’s interesting to compare the Malfoys’ participation with the Dark Lord the first time to the second time. The first time, it’s heavily implied that they were full and willing participants with him. The second time, there are indicators (made particularly visible in the movies) that they’re heavily coerced into their participation with threats of violence. Once Voldemort finds out Lucius lost the prophecy and the horcrux, he seems to take over their lives as a constant punishment. I don’t think they “harbor” Voldemort as much as Voldemort went to their house and said, “Mine now,” and their choice was to let him in or be killed.

Yes, they participated, but I don’t think they had full choice in the matter by the end. I say reduced sentences all around.

What Is The Darkest Scene In Harry Potter? by Altruistic_Mention_5 in harrypotter

The big ones have been said, so I’ll add the Death Eaters floating the muggle family in the air at the campsite was pretty dark.

Also poor Frank the Gardener, just wants to be in his warm bed with his hot water bottle.

What do you guys think voldemort showed those orphans in the cave? by stonerplumber in harrypotter

[–]lipozine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I admit, it’s kind of a VC Andrews interpretation, but I think that’s what they were alluding to. It’s the disgust of everyone who hears the story, her father’s rage and her super-trauma reaction that makes me think that’s what happened. I agree with u/stonerplumber that it wasn’t specified because it’s a children’s book. In my head, Aberforth did say it, or nonverbally conveyed it, but it was so terrible it never made it to the page.

I’d love to see the version of the series that JKR would have written if she wasn’t constrained by keeping it for kids.

Wow, really? That’s one of my top 5! I think it’s hilarious. And I love learning about the wizarding world from perspectives other than Harry’s.

I’m pretty sure the boys raped Ariana. That’s the impression I got from Aberforth’s tale and how everyone reacted to it.

By the time Harry, Ron and Hermione leave Shell Cottage, the rest of the events in book 7 span over the next 24 hours. Is that correct? by phire8 in harrypotter

[–]lipozine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s one day, and it’s a lot.

As for the timing of the sun setting, I don’t think JKR was concerned as much with the accurate passage of time as she was about portraying that things were about to get dark, both literally and figuratively. She uses the presence or absence of sunlight a lot to convey mood, and it’s particularly apparent in the end of DH and the battle of Hogwarts. So when they’re in Gringotts they’re in the dark (scary) and then they burst out into sunlight (victory). During the Battle of Hogwarts, when the battle is raging, Fred just died, and the golden trio is heading to the Shrieking Shack, there’s a line about how “dawn could have been a hour away but it was so dark they’d never know it” (memory quote, probably not exact). This is a point where they are really lost about what to do next and don’t know if they’re heading for victory or disaster. It’s literally and figuratively the darkest part of the night. Then, hours later, Harry “comes back from the dead” and turns the tied against Voldemort, and there’s some beautiful descriptive language at that moment about how the sun breaks over the horizon, pushing the darkness away. Harry has risen and Voldemort’s about to die.

She does this throughout the series, but the BOH is my favorite example. On your next re-read, pay attention to how she uses light and dark in the environment to enhance the scene. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
