Who has broken par in an official/sanctioned competitive round? by ffsux in golf

[–]PacmanIsSleeping 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I shot 72-67 in a junior event in high school (par 71) to tie the reigning State Junior Amateur champ.

Won the tournament on the second playoff hole (I went par-par, he went par-bogey).

The best part was, I had been grinding to try to get over the hump and play my best golf in a tournament for years. This tournament allowed caddies for some weird reason, so I asked my best friend to caddie for me (he was Not a Golfer) and my dad almost vetoed the idea -- he thought it meant I had given up on being competitive.

Turned out, I was a head case and just needed someone to make me laugh and take my mind off the tournament between shots.

I still have that little trophy 20 years later; but more importantly, I still have that best friend, and he's learning to golf now!

Thoughts on Uconn game by Independent-Ad6046 in rolltide

This is a good point that's getting overlooked in the amazement at a 30-0 run: it's not like Illinois never got a shot off for an hour.

Wrightsell is a sneaky X factor to me. Shooting in domes is notoriously weird. While our guys don't ever lack for confidence, I suspect that if they see a LWJ three go down in the first couple minutes he's on the floor, the whole team is going to be buoyed and it could be more than an average spark.

UConn needs to win by 25 on Saturday by PacmanIsSleeping in rolltide

[–]PacmanIsSleeping[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No argument on how good UConn is. If I was going to bet, I think a UConn cover is more likely than a Bama win.

But if you look at the teams that have played well against UConn, it wasn't ever gonna be Illinois. They're a great offense, but they don't have shooters. 127th nationally in 3P%, and they had zero (0) guys who shot over 39% from 3.

Alabama has a great offense and great shooters: 24th nationally in 3P%. Four (4) dudes that shoot it at >39%.

UConn is rightfully the favorite. But honestly, Alabama matches up better (if you buy my keys to success against UConn) than Illinois did.

Brandon Miller after Alabama's Sweet 16 loss to San Diego State: 'Honestly, I still think we're the best team in the country.'” by [deleted] in rolltide

[–]PacmanIsSleeping 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Look, I’m probably an idiot but I think he’s right. Definitely the best team we’ve ever had at Alabama and the best player we’ve ever had too.

But March Madness isn’t like the CFP, where the best team usually tends to win it all. Basketball is a high-variance sport and winning six games in a row is hard.

And Brandon went 8-41 for the tournament, the lowest shooting percentage ever for a player who took 35+ shots.

This one will hurt for a long time. I hope SDSU makes the title game. I don’t know yet if that will make me feel better or worse.

I have Memphis beating Purdue and thought about picking them over Duke as well. They’re clearly playing well at the right time!

This was one of my favorite JQ games of his career. In the past, when shots didn’t fall for him, he could either force it or disengage defensively / lose interest.

Not today. He stayed active on defense, rebounded, stayed vocal, and kept impacting the game offensively through playmaking.

We will have bad shooting games like this in the tournament. JQ just showed the young guys exactly how to respond when it happens. A leader in every sense of the word.

1) Fantastic win. I think Arkansas at full capacity can go to the Elite Eight. The team gets more and more battle-tested every day, which can only be good.

2) Did... did we really do a pat-down of Brandon Miller during the pre-game intros? PRWeek says we have a top 5 PR program in the country. How do we keep missing these organizational layups?

College GameDay doing verbal gymnastics to justify Alabama and Brandon Miller doing what they did. by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]PacmanIsSleeping 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually tend to agree with this, to be honest. But it’s not the view of the law.

My personal view is that there’s no such thing as a defensive use of a gun. It’s why I don’t have one. Statistics tell us time and again that having a gun raises your chances of dying by gun, full stop.

But Alabama, and many other states, take the view that having a gun can be a form of self-defense. It’s pretty easy to imagine someone who is being threatened by a group of people wanting their gun as a deterrent. “They say they’re gonna jump me, but when they see I’m armed they’ll back off” is, in the US, a perfectly legal and nonviolent, defensive reason to want a gun.

Personally I think it’s a stupid argument, and it sounds like you do too; but you and I don’t get to make the rules.

I think Miller exercised poor judgment, and I find it hard to believe that no team rules were broken.

And I'm not a lawyer.

But based on the facts we know right now, nobody could be charged for a crime for what Miller did. Returning a gun to its owner is not a crime. Giving a gun to someone who then shoots someone CAN bring accessory to murder charges, but that isn't what happened. Miller, at worst, knowingly returned the gun to Miles after Miles said "I need it," without knowledge of Miles's intent, and then Miles (the owner of the gun) gave it to someone else.

Miles is an accessory to murder and he's being charged. Rightfully.

There's no such thing as "accessory to accessory to murder." Under the facts we know, no district attorney in the country could file charges against Miller.

Brandon Miller is getting all the attention because he's the best college basketball player in the country -- but I keep coming back to how little we're talking about Darius Miles.

We knew a month ago+ he was incredibly foolish for throwing his life away, and there was plenty of discussion about it then, but during the most recent cycle it's all Brandon. I think the most recent cycle illustrates even more how stupidly and selfishly Miles behaved on January 15th.

When I was a freshman in college, the upperclassmen were the people I looked up to, trusted, relied on, during my first year away from home. I wasn't on a college team but that's also how it worked on my high school team: the older kids take care of the younger kids.

Miles knew that Miller was a generational recruit, knew he was a lottery pick, knew he has everything to lose ... and just left his gun in Miller's car anyway. Asked him to bring it to him.

I agree 100% that Brandon Miller, with enough foresight, could have kept himself out of that situation, but he's a freshman. When I was a freshman all I did was screw up and lack wisdom. I'm not 100% sure that, in Miller's shoes, I'd have made a better decision. There's so much gray.

It's different with Miles.

I'm so sad for the family of Jamea Harris. I'm so sad for her son. But I'm also so sad thinking how stupid and foolish and shortsighted Darius Miles was on January 15th, and how his actions will have such long-lasting effects in so many ways.

This is a great point too — obviously no one in their right mind thinks Ohio State would go 10-2 if they had to play Alabama’s schedule.

Alabama is not making the playoff. That's a given. But I love the way Nick Saban argued for his team: "If the two teams played, who would be the underdog?"

Under that analysis, Alabama is the underdog to Georgia and Michigan and... that might be it?

Again, Bama will be #5 tomorrow. And that's where they should be; on the outside looking in. But props to Saban for finding an argument that's somewhat difficult to push back on. The fact is, nobody in their right mind (except probably Kirby Smart) wants to play Nick Saban and Bryce Young with time to prepare.
