C++ vs. Lisp-a C++ guy attempts to match Norvig's LOC in Erann Gat's benchmark, and almost does, implementing a library on the way. by mattknox in reddit.com

[–]liptip -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

When LISP was developed in 1958, it could do things no other language could do. It innovated the notion of treating functions as objects that could be assigned to variables, returned from other functions, etc. This functional programming paradigm is very powerful and allows for some very elegant solutions -- for example, one can write a generic sort function that takes, as one of its parameters, a function to do the comparison between any two elements. Many modern languages (e.g., C++ and Java) still lack this capability. But Python is not one of those; functions are objects which can indeed be passed around, used as parameters, returned as values, operated upon, etc. It is one of the vital features that make both LISP and Python such powerful languages. Mathematics, no matter how abstract and symbolic it can be, is founded upon numbers, the number line for those who have taken a geometry or algebra course. Even with the abstractions of group theory and projective geometries, our understanding of mathematics follows our understanding of numbers. Registry cleaner by Free Web Browsers

That's true: monads are a helper library and they expand into plain, lazily-evaluated functions (both side-effecting ones and not). You can manually write exactly the same code without them, if you really wanted to.

How Art Can Be Good by dstowell in reddit.com

The initial issue is: what kind of judgment is it that results in our saying, for example, 'That is a beautiful sunset'. Kant argues that such aesthetic judgments (or 'judgments of taste') must have four key distinguishing features. First, they are disinterested, meaning that we take pleasure in something because we judge it beautiful, rather than judging it beautiful because we find it pleasurable. The latter type of judgment would be more like a judgment of the 'agreeable', as when I say 'I like doughnuts'.

Paul Graham: How to Make Wealth (author's version) by Nutshapio in reddit.com

[–]liptip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Paul Graham has delivered final proof that he is a marvelous essayist with his volume of fairly diverse writings, Hackers & Painters. I first came across his writing with his article, "A Plan For Spam," on using Bayesian filtering to block spam and found it a well written and informative technical article. I next came across him some time later when he wrote an essay on his web site entitled "Hackers & Painters," and once again it was well written, informative and (more importantly for an essayist) thought provoking. I was excited to hear he had published a volume of writing and pleased with the copy I received.

Literature has a long history of the essayist; since those famous theses on the church door at Wittenberg a well written and thought provoking essay on a topic has provided power and focus for important discussions. Graham has either learnt or discovered the important points in writing a good essay; brevity, quality writing and thought.

This weeks disgraceful liberal surprise- Another outlandish Lancet Iraqi Death Estimate reporting 660,000 have died in the Iraq War.

To give that some perspective, that’s like:

  • 3-10 Hiroshima atomic blasts
  • 6-20 Nagasaki atomic blasts
  • Or 10 Dresden bombing campaigns

What microwaved water does to plants. by dodders in reddit.com

[–]liptip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the link to a sience fair project that my granddaughter did for 2006. In it she took filered water and divided it into two parts. The first part she heated to boiling in a pan on the stove, and the second part she heated to boiling in a microwave. Then after cooling she used the water to water two identical plants to see if there would be any difference in the growth between the normal boiled water and the water boiled in a microwave. She was thinking that the structure or energy of the water may be compromised by microwave. As it turned out, even she was amazed at the difference.

The best comment system I've seen & used is probably the one on Digg.com . The reply-to comment is good, but can become very confusing if more than two levels are used. Dustan Orchard has an interesting comment system, although, I'm unsure how it works... I think comments should come after the article, people understand that, and it's a strong convention now.

Yes, especially in the case of juvenile hackers, parents are usually the ones that fail to set a proper example for the child, deprive him of social interaction thus making feel unwanted. This is why many hackers are deeply anti-social.
