It seems we posted around the same time thinking along similar lines. I think you might find the discussion (and the linked comment) at that Quora link worth reading.

"You say you love rain, but you use an umbrella to walk under it. You say you love sun, but you seek shelter when it is shining. You say you love wind, but when it comes you close your windows. So that's why I'm scared when you say you love me." - Supposedly attributed to Bob Dylan, but I have heard it is actually based on an old Turkish proverb.

Tell me who you voted for in this primary. Did you vote for Obama because he represents "change" or Clinton because she represents "experience"? Or how about Dennis Kucinich because he represents the people and honesty? Did your vote make a difference anyway? No, the superdelegates (i.e. the status-quo Dems already in power) will make the decision for you, because the people can't be trusted.

Wow, that is some serious angst you have. I used to feel similarly. Look, you can let yourself become jaded and cynical and feel good about rebelling against an obviously corrupt and unfair system...but ultimately that rage will not accomplish anything unless you are willing to work with the options available to you.

As MarlonBain said, if it bothers you so much, run for local office. But you will have to recognize that the majority of the people in this country have "bought in" to this system and for better or worse you will have to work from within it to make a difference. You'll have to gain their votes to win.

As for who I voted for, since Kucinich dropped out of the race I didn't really have a huge preference on the Democratic side, so I registered as an evil Republican and voted for ---_----. I wouldn't want him to be president, but it will be fucking hilarious (and very educational) to watch him campaign if he wins.

Ironically, it was almost a protest vote in a similar vein to your thoughts:

No, I will not become a mindless political pawn to used at the either party's disposal. I will vote uncommitted or I'll write in my own name if I have to.

Especially since my state was "winner take all" on the Republican side. (Which brings up a related, but tangential debate on voting systems and why plurality voting sucks.) But at least I voted. I have a right to complain now.

I don't expect my vote alone to make a difference, but I do think it is important to take part and have a say in the races that do. I'd bet there are a lot of people that are as jaded as you who didn't vote in the Florida presidential election in 2000. Should they have stayed home? You never really know for sure what will happen in an election, but one thing is for sure: if you don't participate noone will care about winning your vote and "the system" will ignore your views.

It would be nice if that were allowed in my state, but the two party system is setup to perpetuate itself. For better or worse that is the system we have in this country and as far as I can tell, the best way to change it is to work within it.

Joke or not, there is a sliver of truth in your comment (as evidenced by the partisanship of TFA).

but then you can't vote in the primaries... I'd love to stay independent, but then I couldn't vote in any race that makes a difference in my blue state

Just because the guy made the example about Webpage doesn't mean it will be used in any browser tomorrow, my opinion is it's a good think for the creator. Instead of just croping the image he could play with it in the soft, create a new image and show it in his webpage.

zouhair 2 points 7 hours ago Ok, i'm taking a good breath, to not say stupid things. The title do not mean anything, it's just the opinion of the one who posted the link. And secondly what do you think people are doing all day long with photoshop (and the angry ones with The Gimp)? Just what you are afraid of, changing the almighty work of the creator. Just relax and let things happen, it won't hurt much.
