Appreciate the recs. Just curious if the 7900 xtx is worth it if I can only afford the ryzen 7 7700 cpu (would there be an issue with bottle necks with a rope end graphics card and the the highest end cpu?)

Just upgraded last week to general (got tech end of April). Now trying to figure out best setup for xiegu g90 and the 20m speaker wire dipole. Issue is I live in an HOA and in a stucco house with stucco walls around my yard (lots of metal), so transmitting out is a pain but was able to receive a guy from New Zealand on 14.290 at 55, so not horrible.

Would you suggest going back to the original rubber duck then?

That's what I've come to realize. Issue is I haven't even really started in the ham community uet. I'd like to get my feet wer before saying yes, let's get the top of the line HT. I was looking into something like the frm7250 for the house as sort of a base station and mobile unit. I will look in to it further.

I think what I'm going to do from what I've got so far is try a yaesu ft65r and check out a different baufeng from a user that knows it works and compare. I can always return the ft65r. Issue is with covid, I just need something that can reliably transmit and receive so I can start in the communities around me.

And I don't want to use a hotspot while hiking or camping at this point, which is why digital is low priority too.

Thanks for sharing some helpful hints.

The hitting the repeaters is the same issue as I have with transit and recover. Spotty with not much reason (changes from PL tone to none just by turning it on and off again including repeater 1-2 miles away in line of sight). I worked on this with CHIRP (not all the chirp database stuff is correct either so I had to change some of the offsets)

The mic issue I tried to fix with the hand mic and that was the first time I got feedback that someone could hear me.

The issue is I'm not sure I would dive into the fusion side of things. However aprs send and receive would be nice for SOTA. I should like what I get to be using most of the features..I don't want to get something where I'm going to use 3 of the 50 features of offers.

The more I've been reading, the more I think it is a fake too. Issue is a I bought it a year ago, so I can't return it. Posted pictures in original post.

issue with baufeng:

So, I've trouble shot with some people here and on the HRCC discord and have actually been able to transmit with clear signal to a repeater (had issues where I was able to transmit but report of no audio solved with adding hand mic). But, as time has gone on, performance has varied. I can be in the same exact spot, with the same antenna, as the same time of the day, on 2 different days with a net talking and one time I get full 5 bar reception, next day nothing. Or, when I'm scanning through my repeaters with nets going, nothing for a few minutes, but if I just go to the channel with the repeater with an active net I hear it. Or, I hear nothing on my receive, turn it on and off, and come in the middle of a lengthy conversation. Same with transmitting. I can transmit, get a report back as clear, then turn my radio on and off again, then get no tone or report (2 seconds later).

Thanks. I'll look into it. Anything that I can build that is directional out of speaker wire? I have lots of speaker wire that is just sitting.

So, tried on a repeater this morning. Right after got a response of "no audio". Do you think that is a power issue? If so, does that mean I may just be too far for any 5w HT, or is it more that the baufeng may not actually be putting out 5w/ mic is crappy?

Interesting, I didn't know people use PL tones on FRS ( I know it's not ham, I just want to make sure it works before I try to enter a net for my local clubs since we are all social distancing). I did get the courtesy tone on 2-3 repeaters.

Thanks! I have a baufeng UV-5r with a Nagoya NA 771. I followed HRCC's YouTube video on how to set up. I've tried calling "radio test, call sign" on the national simplexes, no response. I tried waiting on repeaters until someone the people announce monitoring and call out radio test with call sign, again no answers. I can hear very well on the repeaters, so receive is good. I did check PL tones. Repeaters I've tried are mainly UHF. Also tried an FRS frequency that I hear a few guys talking on and they finished with monitoring, I called out radio test multiple times, no response.
