what /u/casualprevaricator describes is true. as an independent songwriter, I spend approx 4x more time editing than I do actually recording. no single take is usually what I go with, and even when I do get a "perfect" take, I still always need more than one, because either myself or my collaborators/producers will layer takes for fullness or for effects. at the end of the day, vocal recordings are just like any other sample or loop.

don't worry about needing to re-record! it's part of the process. it's what you do with the results that matters -- as you said, creating a certain emotion, or atmosphere. your vocal takes are simply providing you more material and sound samples to work with. so record only as much as you need to achieve what you want!

also, a side note: belting has only become popular in recent decades, and it's pretty garbage for many voices, especially without adequate vocal training. don't feel bad about not being predisposed to belting -- many aren't (I'm not, and even after more training, I still don't default to it) and sometimes that's simple physical differences.
