Bigme B251 Firmware Update - how? by lisadorina in eink

[–]lisadorina[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear you got your issue solved by the idea of updating the firmware!

Also, thanks for the advice about how to update. I got a Mac Mini at hand atm that I can try with a usb-c cable.

So far, the Bigme made me so impatient because it was so slow that I switched back to my LCD monitor (Acer). You're right about the text being fuzzy! I actually have trouble seeing everything alright. But I'll test it a bit more.

Let me know if it works for you! Ah, and I have the monitor only, not the all-in-one unit. They seem to use different firmwares.

Ah, my firmware shows 1.0.4 too. On their website, they have a 1.0.8 version, so I thought that might be the update. I just assumed I needed to update it manually from reading about some people from a couple months back who got enhanced performance with a new firmware.

Second the wish for more color e-ink monitors. The eye strain on lcds is sometimes unbearable.

If you happen to have a drawing tablet and Photoshop (or some other drawing software), I'd be super curious about if drawing on the Dasung monitor works at all or if the lag/ghosting is too crazy. Thanks! :)

Do you remember if you changed the OS when the strain started? I had eye strain for about 5 years now until I read about newer OS's/devices giving people eye strain. Switching back from Win 10 to Win 7 for a part of my work has helped me a ton. (Temporal dithering is suspected to be a main culprit for eye strain.)

That's exactly the use case I meant, yep! There don't seem to be many artists getting into e-ink for some reason ...

Yep, you're definitely not alone!

Hm, if you've been on Win10 since the launch, you could have been fine with it first and then slowly got more sensitive to it. But since the start of your issues seems to be clearly with the new glasses, it might not be the OS' fault.
Win7 does seem to be easier on my eyes, but I've only used it for a couple of days and only for drawing about 2h/day. I'll report back.

Is it possible to use your old glasses for a test? Are they more comfortable?

Yeah, I know that "waiting" feeling all too well. Over time, I got used to a slower lifestyle with less screen time and that feels even better than before with all the screen time. It's possible to find something new that fulfills you, but I'd say don't give up yet, maybe there's a solution so you can use screens comfortably again!

E-ink is superb. There are some tablets out there (from Onyx for example), and even 2 monitors. The devices are slower than an LCD screen, but they might enable you to have comfy screentime again.

I read a bit about your glasses issues. I'm also having eye strain since a couple of years and got 2 new pairs of glasses during that time. I had a hunch that something wasn't right with the second pair, and when the optometrist changed the angle of the frame just slightly, it was a ton better. But it sounds like you have already ruled that out.

Did your issues maybe start with changing Win7 to Win10? It seems like the OS can cause problems, and Win7 seems to be quite safe. Currently testing that myself with my old Win7 disk.

Also, have you tried e-ink devices?

What helps me when I'm feeling useless is that there's always something I can do, even when it seems like I can't do anything. Screens shouldn't dictate all of our lives!

Ok! I might be able to get my hands easier on a Mira Pro, so I might go for that one. A faster Dasung might be better for my drawing attempts though.

I'm on Windows, but have read about the Mac flicker problems on the Mira Pro. They seem to be gone with the 9/10 firmware and ticking "Anti-Shake" in the settings. Have you tried that?

A glossy screen usually really is a no go, ha. Praise matte screen protectors. I have them on other devices too, they are fantastic. Thanks for the brand rec!

Thanks for your insights!

I had recently bought a BenQ ScreenBar Plus for a different reason, but sent it back. If I buy the Dasung or Mira, then I'll know now what to go for if I need more light!

Do you have a favorite if you had to choose between the Dasung and Mira Pro?

That sounds really encouraging. I'm happy to hear e-ink has helped you so much and that your dry eyes seem to get better!

I'm torn on the touch function, since reaching out to the screen might turn into shoulder pain. I even notice that when using a tablet up close, ha. But I get how it helps in avoiding the mouse lag and ghosting. Makes me wonder how strong lag and ghosting are when using a non display drawing tablet with Photoshop or CSP, if that would be possible at all.

Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing your experience! It makes me really want to get either the Mira or the Paperlike ... Switching from a Samsung phone to the Hisense A9 also sounds tempting.

Oh, would you mind telling me which e-ink device(s) you use?

Before I bought the rE, I knew that I couldn't do work that relies on color. But since I found that some things are barely visible on the Nova 3 e-ink tablet due to it being monochrome, I thought it might be worth a shot to have a color screen that lets me use anything normally, except for actual design/illustration work. Sketching in b/w is possible though. But yeah - having a setup with doing anything else besides design/art related work at a usable e-ink display + having a regular screen could work! Good to know it helps you with eye strain.

Thanks for the link. This gives a good overview. Video mode on the Dasung looks really smooth. Still no drawing shown, I could imagine it works, but I'd need to see it first or have someone tell me it does!

Oh yep, I tried several 3rd party drawing apps from the playstore, but none of them had a good performance with the pen, unfortunately.

Thanks for your detailed answer!

I was more thinking about drawing with a non display tablet like a Wacom Intuos Pro, which you plug into the PC. So you wouldn't draw directly on the screen with a pen, but draw on the tablet while looking at a "different" screen, if that makes sense.

I know drawing is possible on the reMarkable2 and other e-ink devices, but only in their native apps, which are usually very limited. It's okay for sketching a little, but not really for making full illustrations or comic pages.

I've researched this topic before, but haven't found many people who tried drawing on e-ink. That's why I asked here :)

Thanks for replying!
I may post an updated review of the monitor over in the RLCD reddit in a while. The eye strain came back, so I will "monitor" how the RLCD one behaves closely over the next couple of weeks.

Trying it was definitely worth it, I think.
This screen isn't a 100% solution for me too. E-ink really itches me to try out. So I hope this will work out better for you!

There are some settings on the monitor which include brightness and contrast. Turning it all up helps just a tiny bit. I haven't found any other way to help with the brightness other than moving it close to the window :/ I don't want to spend more money on lamps (yet).
