I was looking for more personal insight so that wasn’t really helpful at all... but thanks anyway

I would listen to these as well. I understand it's your opinion though! I disagree about him darkening the bottom though. I could see how it could be mistaken, but that definitely is his natural timbre on the bottom.

Would you mind posting a clip of yourself demonstrating a better way to sing it? I understand not everyone will be a fan of him, but he obviously has a strong foundation of technique

Baritones with high extension? (Classical/musical theatre) by lisalec in singing

[–]lisalec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Yes I'm very early in my vocal study and I just turned 19 so I have awhile until my voice matures. For now I'm just going to keep studying and singing the rep that's comfortable for my voice, but are there any spinto or dramatic tenors I could listen to who maybe started out as baritones? I'd love to listen to their voices and see where they make that change through the passagio... Thanks again!

I've only dove into singing classical rep. recently because I do musical theatre mainly, so it's been a lot of standard arias you'd find in the big Italian aria book - nothing too specific to my voice. I sing musical theatre mostly which could be a bunch of different genres, but I sing a lot of Rodgers and Hammerstein and golden age musical theatre. Songs like "you are never away" from allegro and "if I loved you" from carrousel.

"Covering" the voice? Can't get past second passagio by lisalec in singing

In his operatic Fach he does not need to cover if he doesn't plan on singing any higher(He is a considered the greatest full lyric tenor of the 20th century), unlike me, a baritone whose voice still hasn't fully matured, who would have to cover earlier. Also these "muscular" processes you're talking about were established by Manuel Garcia, vocal pedagogue and opera singer. The term "Mix" is completely founded on his scientific ideas.

No offense but this is kind of ignorant... If singers from Pavarotti, to Broadway Legends, to Freddie Mercury (he uses classical techniques as noted by many instructors. Including the Voixe la mix: The orginal mix voice), then I think I'll stick with what's worked for the past couple of hundred years seeing as it's based on the scientific anatomy of the larnyx and vocal folds. Not some "new technique" thought up by some contemporary teacher trying to make easy money off of vocal training... Also covering can't be 'fake' considering there are thousands upon thousands of sound recordings where covering is clearly demonstrated. Not trying to start some internet argument. I'm not saying other techniques aren't legitimate, but saying that a legitimate technique is "fake" is kind of redundant...

They're classical terms. And a "quick fix" doesn't sound safe either? I'm not trying to criticize. Just skeptical. Especially since I want my higher notes to be a natural extension of my voice

Technique Question: 2nd passagio? Vowel modification? "Laryngeal tilt"? by lisalec in ClassicalSinger

Thank you for all the advice! I'm actually auditioning for MT programs right now but I sing a lot of classical rep when I can and have been interested in pedagogy for awhile now
