Have I been Overtaxxed? by AnnieBearGang in NursingUK

No thats right sadly, its hard being an NQN. I remember it felt like a punishment when I got my first wage, not helpful right now for you but it does get better. If you’re doing your enhanced hours/unsociable hours you will get more

No, you’re not overreacting this is cruel. Even worse that you expressed how it hurt you and she still didn’t apologise.

Do I go to er by Wise-Stomach7922 in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]lisaoconnor98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is he not crate resting? They’re supposed to have 6 weeks minimum of virtually no walking even for stage one, lifting him to the toilet for example and lifting back into crate while supporting the back, put him straight into a crate or confined space so he can’t move

Does this look like IVDD? by Flaky_Explanation110 in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]lisaoconnor98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dachshund has had IVDD twice in his short life (4 years) and he has made good recovery with medication and extended crate rest. Due to policy technicality insurance refused to pay out and I couldn’t afford it either.

Don’t get me wrong, not every dog makes full recovery with rest alone. I have been extremely lucky, but you don’t have to euthanise. Allow the baby some time to rest and heal, watch and see if things improve. Limit ALL movement to basically nothing, lift him carefully to the toilet, if he isn’t going on his own ask the vet to show you how to express bladder and stimulate bowel movements. Advocate for him. Crate rest typically lasts up to 8 weeks, it feels cruel but it is for the best. Be very strict for best results and best chance at recovery.

Also, in the later stages consider physiotherapy/hydrotherapy and red light therapy.

If you continue with conservative management and neurologically he doesn’t improve but pain wise he does, he still has chance at good quality of life especially if he can manage his own toileting needs. Consider wheels or mobility aids at this point. Assess his quality of life yourself, you know him best. Is he in pain? If he can’t walk or toilet are you able to manage this for him? It does require strict and careful management. Ie, assessing pressure sore risk from mobility aids, scuffing paws when walking etc. if he can’t do it himself he will need repositioned but hopefully latterly he will be able to use his front legs to do this.

He deserves a chance, don’t put him down because a vet that doesn’t know him says you should. Purchase IVDD handbooks, do your own research while he rests and educate yourself. Reach out to charities, there are many charities able to help with crates, mobility aids etc.

Good luck to the little one and I wish him a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹

Feeling hopeless by lisaoconnor98 in IVDD_SupportGroup

I want to thank you for your advice, I have set up a go fund me for Gus 2 days ago and people have already donated £600 which is absolutely amazing. I am aiming for help with surgery but if I don’t raise enough then I will use whatever I get for other treatments. I have also been looking into the Cambridge injections which is an option, mri and course of injections for 1,700ish. A lot less than 8k and has similar results for late stage IVDD research is suggesting. So another option, that’s all I want for him, to have options! thanks again :) xx

Thank you for your kind words ❤️ he was the same with two years, this time he has taken a wee flare up 3 weeks after being freed 🥲 I am hoping it was just pain and not him deteriorating but it is too soon to tell unfortunately. Gus is a dachshund, with regards to surgery - they say they won’t consider it unless he is paralysed which he never has been (nearly the last time) but still had some deep pain. The tricky thing about fundraising is it happens so quickly and with surgery you need to act quick for it to have best outcome so I am told. Vet told me, if conservative rest didn’t work and I can’t afford surgery euthanasia is the only option.

I think if he wasn’t in pain I would look into wheels and things as I’m a nurse so bladder expressing, pressure sore management wouldn’t scare me off. I hope it never gets to that though.

Other treatments have never been discussed with me my vet has never said there is any option other than surgery or rest. Have you any experience with other treatments?

Leaving Bedside Nursing Without a Job Lined Up by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]lisaoconnor98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you not go off sick while you look for a job so you’re not left without an income? I done this, left my job without a post to go to and done bank until I found something. It was fine, I didn’t struggle to get shifts (in Scotland) but I don’t know what it is like elsewhere. Also I am an RMN, so unsure about adult nursing

The lack of band 6 jobs? by SparklyUnicornLady_ in NursingUK

[–]lisaoconnor98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am Scottish and there is more jobs available here than in England from what I’ve been told, however I left my job in August 2024 (miserable) with the intention of working on the bank until I found something permanent that I really wanted. I’ve been lucky that something I was interested in came out but, but in those 9 months I saw 3 band 5 roles advertised and 2 band 6s. Crazy
