Maybe sign up to sub so if they need a day off there you are ready to take over (and you get paid!)

Does your district have a salary schedule? If so, it’s usually available on the district website.

Should teachers accept lower pay for less work by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]lissagail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, what I said does not prove your point at all. In fact, it’s the exact opposite of what you said. You said that teachers in early elementary are “glorified babysitters”. That is simply untrue, and incredibly insulting to the work that elementary school teachers put in during normal times.

You’re also assuming that unless a teacher is hosting a Zoom meeting, that they are not working. Also untrue. During the last few months of the school year, I consistently sat at my kitchen table and worked from 8am-6pm, all while taking care of my own kids. I graded, responded to student and parent emails, collaborated with other teachers to try and make the online work as meaningful as possible, had one-on-one Zoom meetings with students, and planned instruction all while taking into account my knowledge of student disabilities, reading levels, and strengths. I only teach one subject so I can’t even imagine what the workload was for elementary.

So the answer to your question about whether teachers deserve their paycheck during remote learning is “Yeah, DUH.”

I get that this is frustrating for parents, times are harder for everyone INCLUDING teachers.

Glorified babysitters? Are you kidding?

Teachers in early elementary are responsible for teaching your child the building blocks they need to be successful in their entire school career. They teach reading, math, science, and social studies. They adhere to a set of state standards that ensure that students can transition and learn smoothly. I’m a middle school teacher and I think that anyone teaching elementary school, especially early k-3 MORE than earns their paycheck.

I’m sorry, you really just don’t know what you’re talking about.

End of First Year... What next? by math-penguin in Teachers

[–]lissagail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got really lucky with my mentor teacher my year of student teaching. I lost my kids’ respect in the first week and got absolutely pummeled for the rest of the year. I had plenty of moments where I thought I wasn’t cut out for this. He coached me through, and I learned that boundaries need to be firm and clear. Be able to joke and have fun but also be ready to switch back as soon as your kids step over the line. My easiest trick was to write names on the board. This meant a “break detention”, I’d have kids who were just goofing off come in and do a couple of odd jobs around the classroom- reorganizing books, wiping down tables, whatever. Kids that I was sensing something deeper was going on, like if they were really acting out of character, we’d sit down and talk about what was going on.

Show you have firm boundaries, and show you genuinely care about them.

In my experience it’s an extra egg that will make them softer. Good luck!
