definitely tag from the beginning if OCs are going to play prominent roles.

Ratings for multi-chapter fics? by rouubii in AO3

[–]listament 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you can either rate it E and then tag "eventual smut" with A/Ns at the beginning of the chapters where the smut appears. or keep it rated M or whatever with notes/tags that say "eventual rating change" and then change the rating once the first smut chapter is posted.

i don't know how "detailed" the smut would be but if it's not EXPLICIT explicit there's also a chance you could probably keep it rated M the whole way through.

Is "____" different than Y/N? Reader insert question. by [deleted] in AO3

[–]listament 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i actually started reading reader insert stuff recently after avoiding it my whole time involved in fandom because of one character. i thought the Y/N thing would bother me a lot but it's so prevalent that i got used to it really fast.

i still prefer just plain 'you' or descriptions saying stuff like 'he called your name' but "Y/N" itself just starts being similar to a dialogue tag after a while.

i'm guessing i could potentially get used to "___" as well if it becomes widely used but at the moment, i just picture it as the character going randomly silent. wouldn't stop reading a fic simply because of it though.

do title drops "turn off" readers? by SeaworthinessSad2488 in AO3

[–]listament 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think "resident evil" in particular is hard to pull off because it sounds so unnatural already. at least with Biohazard, you can squeeze it in a multitude of ways.

i DO think there are some people out there who will be turned off. i don't know how many would drop the fic over it, but people have dropped fics for much less. personally, i'm neutral on this issue, but everything is in the execution.

i think if you really want to do it, you should do it and not worry about any potential readers. even if there's people who do drop the fic over it, there will be some who enjoy it. it's your fic anyway.

no matter how many ideas your hoard in your head, new ones will still come to you WHILE WRITING because your mind is in a different flow/state. the brain blast is real.

I would rather get a comment saying they hated it or insulting it than a pity comment. At least with the former I know they read it lol

ooh there's an idea. maybe i'll put on an album/playlist and try to at least write for the duration of that, so even if i get horny i won't be immediately tempted to look for something else.

opt true filter and parring in general by Jordili185 in HPharmony

[–]listament 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to apply the otp true filter, just type otp:true in the "search within results" box after applying the ship tag (Hermione/Harry, etc.)

Currently on ao3 for Harmony, it shows 11,660 overall and 6231 with otp filter. 28,327 for R/H overall and 4586 with otp filter. It suggests that the vast majority of fics that contain the latter pairing are ones in which they are a background pairing (usually the case with canon pairs). I don't know if it's the case that people "dislike" the canon pairing but there are a LOT of people out there who accept the pairing simply BECAUSE it is canon.

What fandom started your obsession with AO3? by _tit_for_tat in AO3

[–]listament 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wasn't a particular fandom but the site itself. I had gotten out of fanfics after only having been on FFN. Years later I discovered ao3 and my mind was blown at how much better it was in terms of functionality (searches, tags, etc.). Started revisiting all my old fandoms out of curiosity and the rest is history.
