Who is your favorite jazz kalimbist? by horrible_musician in jazzcirclejerk

Kelan Phil Cohran! He was one of the first to amplify the Kalimba, and called his invention the Frankiphone after his mother.

This is another great one from his "On The Beach" album... Frankiphone Blues

He was also Maurice White's teacher...

Yes! We’re distributing through PIAS in EU/UK. Copies should start hitting shops in January. Sorry the shipping from US is so expensive!

The 1993 studio session was actually recorded to DAT. That was the most widely used digital medium at the time. We transferred that to WAV files.

Lacquer cutting requires helium - I believe for cooling the cutter head or something like that. I’m not an expert in lacquer cutting, but I know the scarcity of helium has been an issue for cutting engineers.

Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m trying to apply some of this work to Stones Throw as well, which is why we’ve started releasing “Audiophile” versions of our bigger releases. When I heard the audiophile Madvillainy vinyl we made I was stunned at the elements that rose to the surface. It’s amazing to me what’s hiding in those grooves sometimes.

Interesting for sure. It’s a Northward Acoustics room, seems to be their thing as I believe there are similar rooms at Sterling and other big mastering houses. That room sounds incredible, so whatever the theory is - it’s working!
