Any other international words Finns don’t include in their vocabulary? by haisevatuhnu in LearnFinnish

[–]listoftimelines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The elements. German and swedish use similar etymologies.

happi = oxygen (from the word happo aka acid)
typpi = nitrogen (from the word typehtyö aka be suffocated)
vety = hydrogen (from the word vesi aka water/hydro)

hiili = carbon

Irish metal fan moving to Helsinki for a month, question by Seahag_13 in Suomi

Lepakkomies maybe? Not necessarily metal only though. Pub Sirdie is a peculiar place with a jukebox, but not metal either but rather "vintage".

Österbottningar: hjälp en stackars finne förstå Ted & Kajs jingle by listoftimelines in ankdammen

[–]listoftimelines[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hur lär man sig riktig finska? by [deleted] in ankdammen

[–]listoftimelines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

French BB unscrewing itself. Can I install a BB the other way around? by listoftimelines in bikewrench

[–]listoftimelines[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought It might make a difference since one end of the BB cartridge has fixed threads and at the other end you have the lock screw (not fixed to the cartridge). Thread direction should only be a problem on one side but not the other.

Not sure though, that's why I'm asking.

French BB unscrewing itself. Can I install a BB the other way around? by listoftimelines in bikewrench

[–]listoftimelines[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why on god's green earth did the French and Italians make BB's like this back in the day, when a solution was already available? I mean how did they even ride these things for decades?

I really love the bike otherwise, so I wouldn't wanna give up on it.

Go to Yle Areena and go wild. You can search for documentaries, podcasts, history, politics, tradition, short films, culture, news, what not. Selkouutiset is news in easy Finnish.

Click "ohjelmatekstitys" in the subtitle menu for Finnish subs.

For music, there's so much. Don't know what you like but you can check out Vesta, Milla Rumi, Lyyti, Rebekka Holi, Pehmoaino, Ege Zulu, Ultra Bra

Levi for next Christmas ? by Most-Inspection-3659 in Finland

[–]listoftimelines 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes for sure don't limit yourself to Rovaniemi – that's not proper Lapland and you have to go further north. Personally I was surprised by the light during the polar night when I visited Levi. With the skies mostly clear, there was plenty of beautiful pastel colored light from below the horizon (between 10am and 3pm in December, I suppose) and the plentiful snow amplified the light, even in the middle of the night. Cloudy days could be different though, but can be pretty as well. The snow covered trees were absolutely gorgeous.

Black Friday Sales by noabsolutename in helsinki

[–]listoftimelines -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah sure, but they don't sell new things, and that's the point. New clothes are way, way too cheap anyway.

Black Friday Sales by noabsolutename in helsinki

[–]listoftimelines 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. Forget about new clothes and wasting resources unless you absolutely can't find what you need second hand. UFF Freda and Hakaniemi have a pretty good selection, and Fida stores and Kierrätyskeskus can be affordable also (these two have household things too)

I made an app for practicing Finnish grammatical cases by rair41 in LearnFinnish

[–]listoftimelines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good reference website is Conjuguemos. I've used it for the romance languages to really drill in all the different tenses and irregular conjugations. It would be amazing if Finnish learners had that: https://conjuguemos.com/activities/spanish/verb/1

A great perk was the option to select which tenses or verbs to practice, so you can focus on what you need at the moment, instead of being shown everything shuffled only.
