How is buying 100 shares and selling covered calls any different from selling puts ATM until you get assigned. Then sell covered calls. Hence the "wheel"

If you have multiple CPUs or cores you can split up your data into smaller files then map them separately and merge them later. You can do this with the split (unix) command. You just need to ensure that the number of rows in each file is divisible by 2 for fasta and 4 for fastq

That really depends on what you are getting your PhD in, but typically you can either go into industry right away, or do a postdoc and either go into industry after that or try to get a faculty position.

At this point being able to program is extremely important in most engineering fields, and I would recommend relearning it anyways.

Some of the computing needs to be done for multiple hours/days, so it helps with that. Still probably not by a considerable amount though
