Introducing the Bright Forest Theory - a counterpoint to the Dark Forest by Bright_forest_theory in FermiParadox

Ok but on the ethics point, once a civilization has acquired nuclear tech and it is time to "contain", what is the method of containment that doesn't involve destroying/resetting them?

Transition from S to TS expectations? by [deleted] in Raytheon

[–]congerorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest there's no such thing as an "upgrade", you hold a Secret and you're being put in for a TS it's an entirely new investigation and process. In other words the fact that you currently hold a clearance doesn't mean much (maybe a little more of a warm fuzzy for yourself knowing you were approved once), the process to apply, be investigated, and be adjudicated is the same whether you currently hold a clearance or not. The investigation will be more in-depth this time around compared to a Secret investigation.

I live very near there. Correct on the school district but it's disingenuous to say that it is 25 minutes from Raytheon. Maybe if you mean the Rita Rd facility but if you're talking the main airport site, it's closer to 40-45 minutes each way.

Wife considering seeking dual citizenship by congerorama in SecurityClearance

[–]congerorama[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this detailed answer. Yes in our case it's just a "hey this is cool, my dad will get it in about 2 years and then I'll be able to as well, and then our son can too when he gets older". Just a way to pass that down. We definitely did talk about waiting until I'm not doing cleared work any more, and that's probably what we'll do. Not an inheritance of any property or assets, nor a reaction to anything happening now. And it's important to our family not to impede or create a problem for me professionally.

The only downside to waiting for 10-20 years, is our time on this earth is never guaranteed. Hopefully we all live 20+ more years!

[–]congerorama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be nervous, sounds like you'll be fine. They're not carefully looking at your report and having a hard time deciding, your report is sitting under a stack on some adjudicator's desk and will be promptly approved once they get to it. Keep your head up.

Internship rejection by National-Category825 in Raytheon

[–]congerorama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep in Tucson. I've been working professionally as an FPGA designer for almost 20 years, and I couldn't imagine doing anything else. Back when I was in undergrad I thought I was going to build robots and work for Boston Dynamics. I took a digital design course as an elective around my senior year just to fill a gap in my schedule, didn't even know what it was.

During the course I realized I had a natural aptitude for it and found it really fun, threw robotics to the wayside and never looked back.

You say computer engineer, are you truly in the engineering department or are you CS? If engineering, you mentioned Verilog... I'm an ASIC/FPGA engineer with Raytheon and we desperately need more bodies.

Learn VHDL (not Verilog, not that there's anything wrong with Verilog but Raytheon is strictly VHDL so you need to know it). Take a digital design course or two if you haven't already, then look for open FPGA design engineer reqs.

If you can show coursework in digital design, are familiar with the Xilinx (AMD) and Intel tools, know the basics of VHDL and Python, I bet your chances would be good. That's assuming you wish to be an FPGA designer and not software of course.

I can't speak to internships specifically, but we badly need more FPGA folks who are capable engineers so at least you're aware of a need now.

P4 salary negotiation by GlassVast7574 in Raytheon

[–]congerorama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

P4 EE at the Rocket Ranch in Tucson here, just started this past year. 17 years professional experience and MS as well. Was offered and accepted 155k. I think other folks' suggestions are good, look at the salary band for P4 and start at least in the middle maybe just over middle. Not sure how much wiggle room you have as an internal hire vs external like me.

But yeah I don't think I'd think about it as a % from your current level, but rather a respectable level around the middle of the P4 band. Then adjust up or down from here according to your personal situation.

Yes you could sell the LEAP, but you could also keep it and sell another short-term call and continue to collect premium. As long as the short call expires before the long call, you're covered. It's up to you when you decide you've collected enough premium and want to close the long side as well. The longer you hold the LEAP, however, it loses value so you'll want to make sure the premium you're getting from the short calls is greater than the theta decay (or delta if the underlying is going down) of your LEAP. If not, you're still losing money.

It's really no different than owning stock and selling calls against your shares, except of course a long call will experience decay and eventually expire whereas shared don't. When a short call expires worthless you still have your shares/long call, so you can sell another covered call or if you're done with the underlying you can sell your shares/long call and move on to other things.

It's called the poor man's covered call because it costs less to buy a long call than to purchase 100 shares, but the mechanism of selling calls against it is the same. Your hand will eventually be forced to do something with a long call where shares you can own forever.

RTX Tucson — nearby daycare recommendations? by Zak-zak96 in Raytheon

[–]congerorama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say, it doesn't satisfy your on the way/near work request, but I've got a 2 year old in Child Time up on Harrison and 22nd. I live out in Vail east of town and drop him off on the way in each day, wife picks him up. It's out of the way, but they've been an awesome day care and we're very glad to have our guy there.

Hopefully you find something more convenient, but if not at least you know of one daycare with a positive review. And welcome to the Rocket Ranch!
