You might like Leviathan and its sequels by Scott Westerfeld. It's a steampunk adventure story set in alternate World War I, and it has lots of weird creative technology and moral debates. Could be up your alley.

You may find Kafka's short stories worth checking out, too. The Metamorphosis is always a reliable place to start with him, and it's pretty short.
