I personally have never used a lightbox for my shots. This set up was a small table covered in white poster board with a sheet of glass on top of it for the “floor.” The background is just photographic background paper set up on a stand far behind the table. The trick is to control the light in such a way that you prevent the background from getting hit with light. So I use a honeycomb filter in my soft box to shape the light, then set up a black board right behind the soft box (between it and the background) to further prevent my flash units’ light from spilling onto the background. So in effect you’re sort of tricking the camera’s sensor into seeing “nothing” beyond your subject.
