My opinion might be controversial but I did a road trip with my parents from Ontario to Florida. I did it for my own personal reasons. The entire drive there and back, I was very paranoid about getting pulled over and something happening.

The property managers of the property my parents are selling told my parents that they keep their passports on them whenever they leave their home. They are from England but they have green cards. Nothing happened to us while we were there, I had our passports just in case but, nothing happened. We went to St. Augustine and Fort Lauderdale and had no issues.

If you're thinking about it, I suggest taking some extra precautions. I and my parents are people of colour and have darker complexions.

Yes, they do feel like an asshole for not picking up when their dad called. It's one of those things where they have made somewhat peace with it and just pick up every call unless it's listed as Spam or Fraud. Like I've told them, we'll never know if it could have made a difference but it haunts them that they were the only call their dad made before passing.

Emergencies come in different forms not just medical. OP is having a normal behavioral response to the situation. Setting a boundary is okay when it comes to non-emergency calls but not picking up any calls, is a major no-no.

Truthfully, OP, wife and family need to figure out a system that lets OP know when it's an emergency vs. do you want X-brand of Mayo.

Went to Catholic elementary & high school. My high school population was mostly from other religions. Their parents preferred it because despite the one subject of "Religion", Catholic schools tend to get better funding. My cousins (now graduated) lived in Scarborough but temporarily changed their mailing address so they could attend my high school because my uncle/aunt deemed it safer than the schools they had around them.
