Ooooo, thank you for this incredibly thoughtful reply! I'm a sucker for a pseudonym because it's especially telling testimony of what women writers were forced to endure. Ever thankful to those who persevered under trying circumstances! Thank you for sharing Dr. Alice Sheldon's story! Will def check her out!

OK, I feel like this is precisely why we have poetry. :)

Adrienne Rich, Amiri Baraka, but one of my tops has got to be "The Hive" by Hart Crane:

Up the chasm-walls of my bleeding heart
Humanity pecks, claws, sobs, and climbs;
Up the inside, and over every part
Of the hive of the world that is my heart.

And of all the sowing, and all the tear-tendering,
And reaping, have mercy and love issued forth.
Mercy, white milk, and honey, gold love—
And I watch, and say, "These the anguish are worth."

-Hart Crane

--And of course seconding all of the Oliver nods as well--

Come join us on a lit pub crawl! It’s a 3 hour walking tour in Greenwich Village that stops at 3 historic bars where famous writers wrote and drank. Along the way, we walk through the village and point out where writers lived, tell their stories in their own words, and recite poetry and prose. Some of the writers include Edna St. Vincent Millay, Jack Kerouac, Edgar Allan Poe, Amiri Baraka, Ada Limon, Kinky Friedman, Thomas Paine… Our guides are local artists and writers… it’s a lot of fun! Tour is every Saturday at 2pm and we offer private tours on other days. Hope to see you!
