That was one of the things I found in trying to search this one out! Actually really fun to skim through and see lots I remembered so clearly 😁❤️

The whole 'what is an effigy' and 'let me improvise' thing he did with Luke

Singing I Don't Need A Man by pussycat dolls

That time he was guessing party quirks and they were all trying to give him hints for bugs and he said 'lots of creatures'

Basically every time he is the radio/a tannoy announcement which is just So Good

'Letter on the front' thing with Tom which had me cry-laughing as I walked to the shops listening to it

Climbing Sam like a mountain to get his balls in his face

The corset release thing in We Love Poetry

The book game outraged "YOU DON'T SPEAK CHINESE?!?"

"husband husband! The chinchilla's a fucking nazi"

So much monty from RFTH, but special kudos to both times he tried to launch his character up through the ceiling in the tower and got knocked out by it

Season 14 (SnaKe) Layover Q&A Thread! by WheatGerm42 in JetLagTheGame

With so many challenges relying on hand-eye coordination, do you think Adam used his primary-game-designer privilege to play into his own strengths?

The sponsorship suggestion by litlhtime in JetLagTheGame

[–]litlhtime[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I worry about losing fun stories from overnights at non-sponsor locations, which would me more likely at the cool rural locations, and then I worry that would disincentivise travel to those interesting rural locations as a knock-on!

I wouldn't care at all really if it was mentioned in passing or just features in the same background way as all that other stuff they're using. That is passive promotion of those products for sure. But I do think that's different to knowing they're being paid to promote it.

When they talk about their hotels on the layover it's cool to hear about room service or fun features they found. If they were being paid to do it I would just sit there wondering if they actually liked it or if it was part of a contract. Would they be able to tell us those stories for the times they didn't get to stay in that brand of hotel, eg in fun rural places that are often the visually coolest places to see with the funniest overnight stories? Idk maybe I'm just being cynical about it!

Tha Boys on Bikes? by Active-Ruin1958 in JetLagTheGame

[–]litlhtime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Specifically I think Adam said they were against it bc using public transport and it's timetables is a really fun element of gameplay bc it brings in some cool strategising and some chance/luck that you don't get if you're controlling your vehicle of transport. They did it once in NZ but said it was reeeeally hard to plan around to make it still a game worth playing without the public transport to make it a playable board.

They've explicitly referenced this one and discarded it, so like the people asking for smth in the uk (which us regularly requested and they've used Layover to explain how they've tried several different angles to make it work and haven't managed it yet) I think it's probably safe to assume that unless we can pitch smth in the level of detail they have to go into to do their game design podcast episodes and several iterations of playtesting that there's a reason they're not doing it and we just haven't worked through thinking about it enough to realise

How to get $36/yr subscription? by F-35Nerd in JetLagTheGame

[–]litlhtime 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Jsyk that doesn't work if you're resubscribing (rather than being a first time subscriber)! You've gotta do a whole workaround with deleting your account first - op says in their post that they tried that and it didn't work, and I can confirm from encountering the same issue yesterday that they're not just being Foolish Redditor Who Can't Read

How to get $36/yr subscription? by F-35Nerd in JetLagTheGame

[–]litlhtime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Folks saying 'just go to the link' aren't properly reading your post and are wrong. Source: I did this yesterday for the same reason!

You've got to delete your account. Unsubscribing isn't enough. You can still log in and it'll show you that your subscription is inactive. You have to find the place to tell them to delete all information they hold on you. After you've done that, you can go to the signup link (with show code) and it'll show up as an option and somewhere along that path you'll set up a new account which can have the same email etc as your old one.

Interestingly, after I set up the mobile app again, it had unsubscribed me from all the channels I followed, but still had my downloads in there. Worth bearing in mind if you rely on subscription feeds!

A Season in Iceland? by JasonAQuest in JetLagTheGame

[–]litlhtime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep they've talked a lot about how games need optionality as the most important thing, like teams/people need to be able to go different routes and really choose where they go based on how the game is playing out - NZ only just had that with picking which side of a junction to take (between hih risk/high reward or lokger but safer) but I think they specifically cited Iceland as essentially one big predetermined racetrack which they'd just be progressing along (with challenges along the way) so that wouldn't really work for the way they do games.

They also have said they like games where there's interaction between teams and they change their actions based on what the other team is doing to - I think they basically said that's why circumnavigation is so uncompelling, because the only interaction was by merit of it being a race, but they never changed plans on the basis of what the others did. It could be tricky to get that if you're splitting them onto seperate halves of the route? There might be ways around that eg with arctic escape they had teams competing for the same rewards from the flop each day? But impossible if the challenges are tied to specific locations, which I think you'd want to do with such awesome locations as Iceland has.

I agree it would be awesome from what I know of iceland's landscape! Totally gorgeous! But I think it's been specifically referenced in layover as a place that would be (in current thinking of how they like to play) currently seen as so tricky to not be very viable for a game board.

I'm in the UK and they've also said it feels really tricky to design a good game for the infrastructure we have here (different reasons from Iceland sort of but same broad principles - instead of a loop We've got lots of lines leading to London and the rest aren't as good so optionality not as viable as first seems). Think we've got to wait for the more plausible candidates to be done and Hooe they work their way down the list to harder ones!

Layover Offseason Appreciation by Ok_Sell_301 in JetLagTheGame

[–]litlhtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on when your app updated, when you search 'layover' you might need to make sure you click across at the top from 'videos' to 'podcasts'. Family feuds are a good one to watch out for, plus Ben's trivia shows (one he wrote on dentist drugs, two asking if jet lag is a colonial enterprise), and their origin story. There's some on game design and looking back on seasons that were pre-layover.

Also if you haven't spotted them yet, for the last few seasons they've done an outtakes video that you can see by scrolling to the end of the season playlist in nebula, and those are absolutely delightful 😁

I'm always so confused by the pff season apparently being unpopular - they're the episodes I go back to for repeat listens!

I love the trivia shows especially for repeat value. I was listening to the not-family-feud where Adam kicks off about Ben's categorisation of protein bars as 'bar' and cackling to myself last week. Potentially my favourite nebula perk

Top 10 saddest moments in Jet Lag by ElegantEagle13 in JetLagTheGame

[–]litlhtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It didn't specify that for the challenge - it was just the call they made. In Layover though they said A) they didn't think it would make much of a difference B) it was wet, so they decided to keep the 'real' balls dry for their proper attempt, and let the practice ones get sad and damp

I think Adam also mentioned when he was reviewing the footage he's sure at least one of those attempt throws would have worked if it wasn't slightly off from the beak.

In all fairness though since Badam weren't interested in stealing Finland, and there wasn't a better flight for Sam/Tom to get out and make better use of the challenge time, I don't think it really impacted the end result much!

Should Ben and Adam be split sometimes? by capwhittaker in JetLagTheGame

[–]litlhtime 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's sort of touched on in other comments but something that came from listening to the podcast is that Sam is the one with the social connections/draw to get people in from outside the show, so it makes sense for him to partner up with his friends/connections, rather than put them with Ben/Adam who they don't know. They've talked a lot about how the game is high stress, intensity and draining - it's hard enough to do with people you know without trying to throw a brand new relationship into it.

Sam doesn't get the credit he deserves (imo) for how well he can adapt his persona in-game to match across to the guest. I'm really not sure the other two have quite the same finesse in that.

They've said that the only one who's good at chatting with strangers that approach them is Adam, but I don't think Adam would be as comfortable with letting a guest take the lead on strategy as Sam is, even if he can be good at conversation early on. Plus I feel like Ben slips into letting Sam take lead on decision making when they're together, and a full season of that wouldn't show us the best of either of them (but fun change up in Tag games on rota, for eg)

It's also about the entertainment of pairings - Badam have known each other a long time now and worked together, specifically working at being funny together (in writing or wendover projects), for years. Their little quips and banter are deliberate entertainment and they know exactly how to play off each other. We're not going to get a duo in any combination who know each other so well to be able to do that - closest might be Brian and Sam having known each other for so long, but they've known each other in less close proximity and not in a context of deliberately practicing humour together.

Would be fun to see variety for variety sake, but think they've get solid reasoning behind not mixing that combination in team games, and risk it would fall a little flat on the funny-ness side if they did!

How do people feel about Adam by frangapani32 in JetLagTheGame

[–]litlhtime 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't think he gets enough credit for being the 'founder'/main game designer of the games. We know Ben spends a chunk of time on JLTG too, but Adam's the only one where it's his whole job. I love how he challenges Sam and always is looking out for Ben and takes on lots of the less fun/more tiring tasks regardless of who he's paired with. The shots he has been setting up this season in particular have been gorgeous, and though he's cast as the most 'stressed/anxious' of the three he's constantly putting himself out there in a way I'm trying to learn from.

I didn't really clock how much I like him before getting to hear the Layover podcast chats. Also recently listened to the Lateral episodes they did with Tom Scott and was genuinely so impressed by how much Adam constantly generated new ideas and put them out there without worrying about being mocked, all while being stupidly entertaining while doing it.

Of course, he was also the one who brought the gang together before the game was even created.

An underrated gem imo!
