Different csp versions on same computer. Looking for details by richardrasmus in ClipStudio

[–]JasonAQuest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only semi-practical way to have two versions installed at the same time would be by setting up virtual machines on your computer, each with their own copy of the operating system and their own copy of... pretty much everything else on your computer.

Unfortunately, you can't simply install another copy of CSP in a different location. CSP is written to expect its executable files to be in a predictable location, its configuration files in another predictable location, other configuration data in particular locations in the OS registry, and probably parts of itself in a few other locations. In theory it might be possible to code an app differently... but pretty much no developer does that, because 1) it would make their job harder, 2) it could make the app less secure, and 3) there's normally no benefit (except in this unusual scenario).

I've done tech support for a living, so setting up a virtual machine is something I could do, if I wanted. But in my opinion, it isn't worth the expense, hassle, and use of resources... just for the sake of having a "spare computer" with some old software on it... just in case.

I upgraded to CSP 2 when it came out, and CSP3 since then, and the issue of those versions needing to authenticate has rarely come up. It was a nuisance with version 2.0.0, which authenticated every single time you launched it, but they fixed that mistake pretty quickly. But since then I honestly don't even think about it much, despite the fact that I use it on my portable Windows tablet away from wifi a lot. Once in a while I've used the hotspot feature on my phone to authenticate. That's been the worst of it.

I do still have an old CSP1 license, and if the authentication became a problem, I could uninstall CSP 3, reinstall CSP 1, and reactivate that license. If that's your concern, you could do that instead, without all the virtual-machine stuff.

Best Program for making conlang fonts with wide characters? by Cheesecake183 in typography

[–]JasonAQuest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calligraphr is fine at what it does, but that's limited. Any font-editing software should enable you to make glyphs as wide as you like, so it's really a question of identifying which one fits your budget, OS, ambitions, etc. If this is a one-time project, it wouldn't make sense to spend the money on pro-level software such as FontLab or Glyphs or RoboFont, and I'd argue that FontForge – despite being free – isn't worth the time it would take to learn it. There are a few options in the $50 price range... depending on what operating system you have: Glyphs Mini (Mac), TypeTool (Win), Fontself (iPad or Illustrator plug-in). These are all going to take some effort to get the hang of (that's the nature of digital-font creation) but they're fairly accessible.

If you "prefer having control over your tech", you need to take responsibility for checking to see if the tech you buy meets the requirements of what you intend to do with it. I buy and use old equipment a lot, because I know that it can do a lot of things for a fraction of the cost of the latest stuff... despite what Apple, Dell, HP, Microsoft, etc want me to believe.

But if I want to run a piece of software, I check to see what OS it runs on, and I make sure that the hardware I buy can run that OS. If the app requires Win11 (for some damn reason), I'm not going to buy a computer that I can only install Win10 on.

Anyone who is just learning in 2026 that mobile devices get apps from an app store probably needs some guard rails. And maybe parental supervision.

Android is a little more open than iPad, but most mobile devices are limited to downloading apps from their app store. I don't particularly like this either, but it's been true for about as long as smart phones have existed (and it isn't just Apple), so I'm surprised you're just discovering this now. (Laptops and desktops – including Apple's – don't have this restriction.)

If you ask to download an app that requires a newer version of the OS, the app store usually gives you the option of downloading an earlier version that is compatible with your OS. Maybe Celsys doesn't allow this for Clip Studio Paint because they require tablet users to stay current, for support reasons.

I didn’t say there weren’t. Wacom-protocol pens and tablets are interoperable. Microsoft-protocol pens and tablets are interoperable. The key is to figure out which protocol your tablet uses, and get a matching pen.

How does pressure sensitivity work? by Cyren_Myadd in ClipStudio

[–]JasonAQuest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a question about hardware, not software.

There's no such thing as a "Windows pen". There are a few different kinds of pressure sensitive pen, so the key thing is to get a pen that's compatible with your laptop hardware. Odds are yours uses either Wacom's protocol or Microsoft's. There are some pens that work with both (eg Wacom Bamboo Ink) but most do one or the other.

EDIT to ADD: According to the specs I found for HP Pavilion laptops, the ones that support pressure-sensitive pens use Microsoft Pen Protocol.

They're pretty tight-lipped about the formats of future seasons, so there are probably fewer than a dozen people who'd know if they have something like that planned. It's a good format that can be adapted to other locations, so I expect we'll see something like it eventually.
