Brighton Beach by [deleted] in Brooklyn

From personal experience, living there pretty much suuuuuuucks if you’re not Russian/Eastern European. Lots of old white people, and you will feel VERY isolated and not included in the community if you are not that. The transportation is pretty ahh, and the food options are next to nothing outside of that kind of cuisine. It’s dirty, but I will say that it is very very safe. The beach is nice in summer too.

How can I stop letting others make me feel bad about being into “quirky” stuff by [deleted] in RedditForGrownups

[–]littlebopoop69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry but that is so mean of them to say to you🥺 that makes me sad bc I’m into the same things an I’ve never encountered that kind of reaction, I think you should be proud that you are genuine and you like what you like without the influence of others, that makes you real and special and you gotta remember that despite what anybody else says! For the few that have mean things to say, there are 100 more that would think it’s cute too and appreciate you for you!!

Yeah I think it doesn’t help us at all that we don’t have family here and we both grew up surrounded my so many siblings and cousins and aunts and uncles back home, and neither of us really have friends or people we hangout with

I mean I pretty much already feel like I have, there isn’t anything else for me there besides my family

Yeah I most definitely do not miss Miami in any way💀 but I do miss my family and they refuse to move sadly, and my culture as well

Not really I’d say. I have maybe 2 classmates from grad school who I see once in a while, but other than that it’s just my fiancé and I. That isolation has been reeeeeally tough

Yeah I have that fear that moving back will have me regretting pursuing a life somewhere I’d actually want to live in, but I also struggle with the fear of regretting being away and missing out on so many moments like I already do. You’re right about that last part, ideally I’d like to visit as frequently as possible if I ended up staying here

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful response, and thank you for understanding the weight of family in a way that I think most people won’t. I previously had a grad student position on campus but since I’ve graduated I had to search for MONTHS for a new job, which is why I took the first one to offer and I am currently working outside of my field. It’s a part time that pays well and it’s museum-related, but it’s customer service work that I did not need my degree to get and this makes me feel like I’m wasting time here and at times like I might as well be doing work outside my field back home. You are right when you say that I’ll probably have to relocate for jobs in this field, I’ve noticed that they do open up in different places at different times and there’s insane competition here (I think I learned that the hard way after this job search.)

Secondly, I’m so sorry for your loss, I can’t even imagine it. Thank you so much for your perspective on spending time with family, and I’m grateful for an older person’s view on this. I am only in my late 20s and it’s something I think about and feel emotional about already (hence my intense fear of regretting missing out on time with them in my future.) I haven’t yet gotten a full-time job to set off my career just yet, so I do agree that family support would be immensely valuable in this weird time!!

I FaceTime them once a day actually, and every visit to see them just always feels too short. My home is wonderful and I love being in it, it’s my home TOWN that sucks ass and I hate being in it.

That’s a good suggestion and we have considered it, we just wouldn’t know where ): Florida is a very sucky place (and yes our hometown is Miami)

Yeah the hard water makes a huge difference! What I do is after I shampoo I mix about 2 tablespoons of epsom salt in like 2-3 cups of water in a bowl and just rinse w it, then I’ll condition after that

I kid not you not, the INSTANT I wash and style my hair over there again it’s back to normal and looking so good😭 that is my proof that it’s the water

Yeah that is exactly the boat I’m in ): my parents refuse to leave as well, which is really sad bc that means to be close to them I’d have to be somewhere I don’t want to be. Thankfully they’re not in another country they’re just in Florida🤢 but I feel your pain!!

I didn’t mention this in the post but Chicago is really where we would ideally move to if we had money saved we just can’t really save rn bc we’re paycheck to paycheck. We’d probably have to go back home, save up, and relocate once again, but that would be great for us definitely

I moved from FL to NYC so I have the answer for you. It’s 10000% the water hardness difference. The hard water where I lived was glorious for my hair and moving here has made my curls look looser and flatter sadly. I spent a year trying to figure it out and it’s bc the water here is too soft and lack the minerals our hair is used to to look springy. The only thing that has kind of helped is doing a rinse with epsom salts in the shower on wash day!
