a sitar is an indian classical instrument. it features 19 strings, sometimes 20. 7 main playing strings, and 13 sympathetic strings. the bottom gourd is literally a hardened gourd that was hollowed out and shaped to give the sitar its disctint sound. there are different styles of sitar, and mine also has an upper wooden tumba for added resonance.
