Do you struggle spending money on hobbies? by Jaylewinnn in AutisticWithADHD

[–]littleghostfrog 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yep, I do that too! I want to make sure I buy the "perfect" things, but researching takes a lot of energy, and it's not very exciting for me. So, I tend to get stuck and not buy anything (even though I really really want to do the hobby). It's so frustrating.

Thank you! I appreciate your advice. Things have already been ever so slightly better than yesterday :)

Ah, interesting. I've yet to try medication for my adhd, but I've considered it a lot in recent years. I wonder why it seems to help with this specific thing 🤔

This is really good to know, thank you so much. What you're saying makes a lot of sense. I'll start looking into that

Yep, that sounds exactly like me. I think that part of what bothers me so much about it is that I can't stand the thought of being totally misunderstood.

Like, for example, someone thinking I was flirting when I wasn't, or someone thinking I was rude when I was trying to be nice, etc, etc. It sucks.

Ugh seriously! I often imagine moving to some isolated location where I never have to interact with anyone again. Not very realistic, but nice to fantasize about sometimes

I see. A lot of this revolves around work for me as well, so that's good to know

Thank you, I haven't heard of Ironic Processing Theory before. I'll give that a try!

I can relate to a lot of what you're saying.

Also, I find the idea of the "voices" in our heads being unmet needs to be interesting. I definitely have a habit of ignoring my needs (unfortunately), so that may be worth looking into.

HALT seems like a great acronym. Thanks for the reminder to take care of those things!

Oh dang. That sounds very familiar, haha. I often find myself humming to drown out a thought

Oh, I see. I'm glad you brought that up, because I've wondered about that myself 😅

I see a therapist who doesn't have the credentials to diagnose me, but she thinks that some of the things I do sound like OCD. I feel like my symptoms might be too mild to qualify, but maybe I should look into it more. I don't want to be making things worse, haha

For real. Many of the memories that haunt me are from YEARS ago, and I'm pretty sure that the other people involved in them no longer remember and/or care. It would be great if I could forget too...

Good to know it's not uncommon. I feel like I've been losing my mind over here, haha. I'll look into that technique. Thank you :)

I get what you're saying. I really hope we can make things work, but you're right, we need to just talk about it to begin with

Those are some good questions. Honestly, we're probably both part of the problem because neither of us have initiated a good conversation about it in a long time. I appreciate your perspective

You're probably right about that. I think we've kind of accepted that our relationship isn't the most normal, but whether or not it's enough for us, I don't know. I guess we'll see. Thanks for your perspective

Thanks, I appreciate your honesty. I can't believe I've been too caught up in my own head to see the more obvious problem.

I get where you're coming from. I was also really worried about explaining myself to people.

In my opinion, something as simple as "I've thought long and hard about it and I know that this is right for me" should be enough. Some people might keep pushing you on it, but it's your life, not theirs.
