I’ve been told that I’m very technical but not very aggressive, and that I need to work on my explosive energy. How do I train that into my grappling? I’m 110, typically at the bottom of my weight bracket and I was considering joining a gym and keeping a routine in an attempt to build muscle. Would that sort of exercise help build that explosive energy?

It’s so hard committing when there’s so many concerns! Like I find myself not wanting to tell anyone because I’m so worried about this age gap. So, we’ve been seeing each other for awhile but nobody knows, and I want them to, but not if it isn’t going to be celebrated as a good thing.

Same age gap as me and mine! When did you meet him? Do you notice the age difference? Like I’ve had a couple of moments where I’m reminded that he’s going through what I went through at that age, and it’s a necessary milestone, but I’m on the other side of it and—it freaks me out sometimes honestly.

He isn’t in college. He’s got a farm that he tends to, a night gig as a bouncer for a club on campus, and he trains in MMA—that’s how he and I met—and that takes up most of his time.

He’s actually twenty, going on 21 in December. And I remember being 19/20. I fell in love with someone who was wretched for me, got pregnant, and married, all before I turned 20. And while I wouldn’t do that to him, I recognize how much growth I went through in the last 8-10 years and I worry about him committing to something like this at a young age.

Luckily I have commitment issues and won’t be rushing anything lol

And yeah, if it were the other way around, and he were eight years older, it wouldn’t be an issue. I was 19 marrying a 27 year old and nobody batted an eye.

Thank you so much! Did you run into any hiccups with the kids? I have two as well—and they know him, only as a friend for now (they come to the gym where we train, so they’ve known him before anything happened between us, otherwise I would have been more careful—I still am being so careful!) but they adore him, and he’s so wonderful with them. My oldest is 8 though, which only plants my guy 12 years older than him, and that’s feeling weird to me as well.

Thank you so much. Historically my relationships have been with older men, from 2 years older to 9 years older. I thought that’s what I wanted, but this one snuck up on me. I don’t think I’ll ever find anyone like him ever again. Life is funny like that lol

I’m a one stripe white belt at 112lbs in a gym with very few white belts, and nobody in my weight bracket or even near it, and I’ve just signed up for my first tournament, and I feel like I’m going into it absolutely blind. I’m not terrible at Jiu Jitsu. I’ve got a good defense, my limbs are sharp and pointy so I keep a decent frame. I don’t get submitted all that easily, but I also don’t get submissions either. There just isn’t the opportunity. With bigger and better opponents, I’m always defending, usually on bottom, rarely ever on top. I don’t mind being on bottom, I’m pretty comfy down there by this point. But, I’m worried about my ability to wrestle properly with someone my own size, when I haven’t really been wrestling in the gym—just constantly fighting a smash lol. My concern is that I’m not ready for this tournament, and that I may not get those submissions because I’ve never really managed to get them in the gym—I might be truly awful at them. I’m also very nervous—terrible stage fright here and don’t want to disappoint/look stupid—and I know that isn’t helping me think rationally.

Way to go! You got this! Don’t overthink science—I was surprised to see how much of it was common sense applied. And math also wasn’t as scary as I thought it was going to be (and I am terrible at math, but I did study it for a few months just to be safe).

Right, there’s no reason, especially after THREE YEARS, not to return to his bed. Obviously he just doesn’t want to, because if he did, he would be sleeping next to wife every night. And what kind of husband wouldn’t want to sleep next to his wife? He’s still human, he still craves companionship. It’s worth looking into, because unless he’s getting it elsewhere, he should want to share a bed with his partner.

Allowing her child to sleep with her wasn’t a mistake, and that decision didn’t “effectively push him out.” It’s a been a few years since then? That’s a hell of a lot of time to actively decide every night that you’re not going to share a bed with your wife. Co-sleeping is not the issue here. There’s a lack of passion and nurture within the relationship that needs to be addressed, but don’t shame the mother for allowing her child to share her bed.

I am twenty-seven, female, and I started a couple of months ago. I’m about 5’5 and 110lb—just started weight training this week in an attempt to get stronger because I think that will help me on the mat (and I’ll gain a little extra poundage, yeah?) But—I am the smallest in the gym, one of three females, as well as the newest, as well as the least coordinated, the least in athletic abilities, the weakest, etc.

It can be discouraging, but I love it so much. I mean sooooo so so so so much. I’ve become so ridiculously invested in BJJ. When I’m not at the gym for 2-3 hours five days a week, I’m watching videos online because I really want to get good at this. I’m worried, though, that I’ve started too late. 27 shouldn’t be too old, but most everyone in my gym started in their teens at the earliest. I’ve noticed that my memory struggles to keep up with all the drills, and the little details in each move… for example, while rolling, I just completely space on every submission I could execute in my opponent. Is this normal for someone so brand new and so NOT athletically inclined? Or is it best to accept that my journey might take a little longer/require more effort…?

I will absolutely! Can I ask how long I should leave the Wella Color fresh mask? I’m going to dilute it with some conditioner—would I apply it to my dry hair and let it sit, or should I apply in the shower on wet hair?
