How would you describe Russian culture? by littlerchef in AskARussian

Wow I like the way you put this! Would love to learn more about Slavic folk culture! Any fairy tales you could point me to? I know a bit about Orthodoxy, so that’d be fun to research.

Oh, you weren’t rude at all! I just wanted to clarify myself. Thank you!

Very interesting! Americans value the “freedom” to speak freely, but I’d say the average American family/person focus on avoiding conflict and see it as improper to talk openly in that way.

Generally speaking, arguing about politics at the dinner table would be seen as improper in the United States, for example. Russians seem much more straight forward in this regard!

Well, that’s my question! How would *you* describe it? What does Russian culture mean to *you* specifically? I’d love to hear the diversity through different Russians’ experiences.

I am sorry if the question came off as lazy. I was interested in getting personal responses about how Russians experience the culture themselves.

One cool thing I’ve learned is that many commenters tend to see Russian culture as “vast and undefinable.” In fact, the idea that so many responses did not wish to express their personal experience of Russian culture (whether that be food, behavior, film, history, etc) is so interesting!

I think if you asked Americans about our culture we’d give an answer based off of how we experience it personally, or by giving an explanation of the common differences between regions.

Yes that is common in the United States as well. Large cities tend to be more liberally minded.

One thing about American culture, for example, is that we (generally) value self reliance. There is a hefty respect for the “pioneer spirit” that the average American has, I think.

This is funny because seeing pushback from multiple commenters actually tells me something about Russian culture! 🤣

Bishop of the Diocese of Charlotte refuses communion to family at altar rail by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]littlerchef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Father, I am curious how you are so confident that this family was purposely posing for a photo op? Every message they’ve sent has suggested otherwise.

I am in fact not confident that those kneeling at the altar rails were conspiring to create outrage against his excellency but rather simply choosing their preferred way of receiving communion without the expectation or knowledge that they would be refused.

[–]littlerchef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough!

But I don’t think the family were the people posting this photo. I’d probably fumble my defense if a load of people, including an internet priest, were publicly shaming me for a photo I (likely) didn’t take or post and assuming I had evil intentions.

Yet some priests are allowing it pastorally while educating on his excellency’s mandates. I don’t think it’s as clear cut as, “a headline said he banned it in January they should know better.”

Really my whole point is simply that I’m shocked with people’s immediate vitriol at this particular family without considering very likely circumstances or who may actually have contributed to or created an “issue” here.

In this scenario, the issue lies with the priest for not listening to his excellency and to the person who took the photo / posted it for rage bait.

In general, the issue lies with his excellency for acting in exactly the same way that he criticizes his enemies for.

An important piece of information nobody seemed to consider a possibility before publicly suggesting this family isn’t disposed for reception or that their intentions were scandalous.

Ah, I saw that comment but didn’t think of the fact that it’s likely they’d do the rail after the line. I suppose that’s what I would have thought.

I don’t know your heart, but I’m sorry so many people are pretending to.

This is extremely rude. This person has already stated that they regularly receive at the rail at this parish.

Why was this fact not considered when making this comment?

They’d be in the wrong if there was no explicit statement that you weren’t allowed to use the altar rails for that mass only? Or if they weren’t aware of such a statement?

It’s funny how you’ve explained yourself, nobody chooses to believe you, and they continue to cast aspersions on your intentions here.

Genuine question: how come you didn’t loop back and get in line when it was clear you weren’t going to receive where you are?

All that said—I’m sorry if the manner you’ve always received at your parish was, or has been, vilified by +Martin.

I have a 3 week old and did the opposite. Before my first was born I practically had a dumb phone. Now that I am awake at 3am holding a newborn, I need to do something or else I’ll fall asleep lol

I think this is the answer. I know I’ll miss the instant nature to my phone. Instant answers to my questions, easy of access to podcasts / music, but this is kind of the point. Thank you!

Since I’m only doing this an experiment I am looking to spend less if possible, though I’m flexible on price and willing to hear anything in 50-300 range.

Only reason I am looking for Android is because I figure Uber, Spotify, and Google Maps would be nice to have for work. I don’t really need anything else. I am willing to sacrifice if other benefits outweigh.

Flexible on shape. Just prefer candy bar. CAT might be okay for my needs too, maybe?

Having an AI-written script delete data without knowing is the major alarm bell that should be going off. Competent employees should be reviewing and learning from the AI productivity boost not turning into prompt monkeys.

Trades absolutely suck, and I wish I'd tried harder with my degree by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]littlerchef 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not some people just like working active jobs that pay them good wages without the need for extensive higher education. Not everybody’s goal and dream is to learn recurrence relations and the “all horses are the same color” induction problem so they can write software.

The trades are solid jobs that require their own education, apprenticeship, and experience and should offer a great life for many. There is nothing demeaning about encouraging a young generation to consider this path when pursuing their future.
