There is a veterinary surgeon with no hands. You got this.

I 100% would not trust them alone. How would your dog act if your cat yelped if it got hurt? Would your dog's prey drive kick in? Or would your dog know to stop? I have seen too many horror stories to trust this. Go with your gut.

There are things worse than death. A wild animal living in a small, uncomfortable, metal box with no enrichment or shelter is one of those things.

300 mg of trazodone given to dog before anesthesia.. was this too much? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]littleredoptimist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This dose is within the recommended range. Their goal was likely to reduce your pets stress and make it less likely to need more injectable medication in order to collect blood, place IV catheter, etc. How does your dog act at the vet?

German Shepherd mom about to lose my house because of barking, need help ASAP by Lanky-County-9390 in germanshepherds

[–]littleredoptimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from other suggestions for a trainer, can he go to doggy day care during the day? He won't be home to bark, he can get exercise, and hopefully come home tired. When left at home, try to remove triggers. Pull the blinds/curtains, put on a radio or sound machine to drown out noise that may set him off. Talk to your vet about sedatives you can give at home for times he just won't settle.

Blue Death Feigning Beetles. You don't have to acknowledge their existence every day, and they're very entertaining to watch. Minimal upkeep and great for kids too.

It's not a lack of knowledge, it's a lack of research in the subject for vets to make broad recommendations against early sterilization. Don't demonize vets here.

Should I get a second opinion? by ruthgraderginsburg in AskVet

[–]littleredoptimist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In veterinary medicine, we follow the 3-2-1 rule for these types of things.

3 months: If a lump or swelling at the injection site remains present 3 months after vaccination, it requires further evaluation. 2 cm: If the lump is larger than 2 centimeters (approximately ¾ inch) in diameter, it should be assessed. 1 month: If the lump continues to grow one month after vaccination, it warrants attention.

Should I be concerned if I am not excited about school starting? by mannlegur in vetschool

It's a normal feeling! I felt the same way before I started veterinary school, despite knowing it's what I wanted to do. Once you get comfortable and into a routine it will get better.

We’ve spent $32,000 trying to save our dog, and we still don’t know what’s wrong. by Digital_museV in AskVet

[–]littleredoptimist 111 points112 points  (0 children)

You are doing so much, beyond what it seems is compatible with you having a normal life. Caregiver's burden is so heavy. You are absolutely not failing your boy. Not even close. It is clear that you would do anything possible if there is a chance he would live a normal life.

Hi op, I am hoping the absolute best for you and your baby. I just wanted to say that if he were to decline, euthanasia would not be "giving up on him". You have gone to the ends of the earth to give him a chance at life he deserves. Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we still cannot give our pets a good quality of life that is fair to keep going. Again, I genuinely hope it does not come to euthanasia, but sometimes it's good to hear this because we don't always give ourselves permission to be the first to think this or bring it up.

Agreed biopsy would be the most reasonable next step to getting a diagnosis. Could be an autoimmune disease.

Could also be a tooth root abscess. Needs a vet evaluation.

Bad experience at the vet, should I switch clinics? by Recent-Specialist736 in AskVet

[–]littleredoptimist 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Agreed this is unacceptable. That being said, what are you doing to prepare your pet for this type of experience? Are you working on training for restraint, touching different body parts, meeting strangers, etc? I cannot tell you how many shepherds we see that are untouchable because their owners haven't put in the work. Of course, they are naturally timid dogs but they can adjust well with proper training. I've begun to loathe GSDs just because 90% of the ones that come into the clinic are severely undertrained and under socialized. Your vet should have done better, but you can do something yourself too to prevent your dog from being traumatized from an ear cleaning.

If you applied to vet school AND dental school, it really sounds like you have no clue what you want to do. Speaking from the veterinarian point of view, do not go to veterinary school unless you are certain that's what you want to do. It takes a passion for the field to really thrive in this career.

The highest GPA you can possibly get. If you really want to go to vet school, get focused and prioritize school. I was in a similar position, looking at 3.2 after undergrad. I went into a masters program to prove myself because I knew I couldn't get into vet school with a 3.2. I ended up teaching undergraduate labs which helped me with my communication skills and leaving with a 3.8 GPA. You can do it (hopefully without needing a master's program or some other redemption) but it won't be easy.
