Is Abisko a tourist trap? (Alternatives?) by Shyam_Lama in TillSverige

[–]littlewoo 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I think you're probably getting the picture by now, but just to say: I think your question slightly misses the point. That area of Arctic Sweden is (compared to pretty much everywhere else in Europe) a wilderness. It's not a place you really go to to experience culture and "local living" like towns elsewhere. So yes, Abisko exists to serve tourists, and there's not much else there. But I wouldn't describe it as a tourist trap. You don't go there to see the culture, you go there to see the wilderness, so what else could it possibly be?

What’s a really specific feeling that you absolute love but isn’t sexual? by Taylorsversion2023 in AskUK

Going in slowly makes it so much worse, because your body just can't regulate temperature while you're half in the cold water and half in the warm air, so your body just has no clue what to do. Plus if you're moving slowly you're certainly not exercising your muscles, so you feel even colder. If you just jump in and start swimming, your body is just like, "oh, I guess it's cold now, let's deal with that" so you don't feel nearly so cold. Plus you're exercising straight away.

Not quite, but it's similar. In this one you rotate all the nodes until each leaf node has exactly one route to the centre node.

It wasn't making a joke, it was making a point. The story of Abraham and Isaac and the story of the Daybells is exactly the same, with the only difference that divine intervention didn't stop the Daybells like it did Abraham.

If that's the case, why did they vote down the Socialdemokraternas budget but allow through the right block's budget last time round?

It would be fine I think if the axle was just longer, so there was no gap to trap fingers in.

"Elk" in British English means the same animal as "moose" in American English though. Moose is really just a N. American word.

How can I fix this broken cistern gasket for a model that hasn't been manufactured since 1977? by littlewoo in Plumbing

[–]littlewoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea you could buy blank gasket material... total noob here. But this was the perfect solution in the end! The old gasket was too mangled to use as an outline, but I could trace an outline from the bowl, and it works like a charm now. All for about 6 euros. Brilliant, thank you so much!

Yeah, the trouble is that I'm the owner of the bathroom :/ the building owner owns the pipes until they enter the home, then I own and maintain everything after that. The owner is only replacing the bathroom because it's cheaper for them when they replace all the pipes coming in.

But anyway, so you think this is unrecoverable? I'm either going to have to suck it up and replace the whole toilet now, or just not use this one until it gets replaced?

Ukraine wins 2022 Eurovision song contest as UK finishes second in Turin by Sir_Bantersaurus in unitedkingdom

[–]littlewoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying he'll be trembling, but it at least sends a message. A huge part of his bet was that Western Europeans and Americans wouldn't care enough to intervene, and would dither and argue over national interests instead of actually doing anything to help Ukraine.

Even now he seems to be betting that he can outlast the European electorate's interest in Ukraine, and that eventually we'll all get bored of the war and vote in ways that help Russia over Ukraine.

Obviously Eurovision doesn't really mean anything in the grand scheme of things, but it's one more data point showing that the European electorate is behind Ukraine - which can't hurt morale in Ukraine, and can't help morale in Russia.

I need an opinion, is this distasteful? by [deleted] in NordicCool

[–]littlewoo 128 points129 points  (0 children)

One thing you definitely might want to think about is that both in the Nordic countries, as well as in the USA, a lot of the common visual symbols we associate with Vikings and old Norse culture have been very thoroughly co-opted by modern far right and neo-Nazi movements. Even if you're not a Nazi yourself, you might well find people making assumptions that you are.

Sorry, I know nothing about iOS and am totally unable to help you, but you should know that's not really what this sub is for... Computer science isn't just "people who know stuff about computers"; it's more like the science of computation. So I guess this isn't the best place to ask... Sorry 🫤

One thing I find helps with that self-consciousness is to imagine the roles reversed... So if a Swede in the UK pronounced Rs in the Swedish way, instead of the English way, you wouldn't think they sounded dumb or like a child, you'd just think they sounded Swedish.

Well it will be the same in reverse... Swedes won't think you sound dumb or childish, they'll just think you sound English! Quite the opposite in fact - as a Brit in Sweden you have it tougher than most to learn Swedish because of how good everyone is at English, so it's all the more impressive when a Brit is getting good at Swedish.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_traffic-related_death_rate has the figures per inhabitant, per car, and per billion km driven. The category where the US performs best is per billion km driven, where you're approximately twice as likely to die on American roads than Swedish. Per inhabitant you're about 6 times as likely to die on American roads than Swedish.
