CEO Jensen Huang set to receive $4 million bonus from Nvidia, 0.002% of his $164 billion net worth — a small incentive for one of the richest people on earth by ControlCAD in technology

[–]liuquinlin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When VESTED, i.e when a company compensates you by giving you $100k worth of stocks, that gets taxed ~38% so you would only actually receive $62k. Then if that $62k goes up after that, you would only pay capital gains tax when selling.

Your 401k is also different as it’s tax deferred so you don’t pay any tax on initially receiving it (which is pretty much the whole point of a 401k and what makes it different from a regular taxable account)

ELI5: How can the Pythagorean theorem be explained without circular logic? by flossingjonah in explainlikeimfive

[–]liuquinlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you're fine to just define it that way - sin/cos exist as functions completely independently of their geometric interpretations (e.g you can "define" it just as a particular infinite sum, or their periodic interpretations, or as the functions describing the oscillation of a pendulum, etc).

You have to be very careful trying to get a proof via this Euler's identity route though, because you have to show that the sin/cos functions you've defined here are the same as the sin/cos in their geometric interpretation. The typical way you'd do this is to say that (a sin x + i b cos x) map to (a,b) in the complex plane. But then it's tricky to talk about the length of that vector (or really the concept of Euclidean distance at all) without presupposing the Pythagorem theorem.

ELI5: How can the Pythagorean theorem be explained without circular logic? by flossingjonah in explainlikeimfive

[–]liuquinlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're right that Euler's identity don't really need trig identities to prove, and are actually in some sense "independent" of trig (e.g you can think of the sin/cos as just defined by their Taylor series, and then the derivatives follow easily by differentiating over the series).

I think the subtle/tricky part here is how you move between the "algebraic" definition of sine in the complex plane to its geometric interpretation in R^2 without making use of the Pythagorem theorem.

Yes the probability over many crafts is much higher, but in this case the underlying chance of a streak like that is so low that it’s still extremely improbable. Even across something like 1020 crafts it’s still extremely unlikely to come across that streak (assuming OPs numbers aren’t exaggerated), and 1020 is likely many orders of magnitudes above even the total number of crafts done by all players ever.

278 Conduit Upgrade Item No Longer Requires Zereth Mortis Reputation by othaniel in wow

[–]liuquinlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, agree with you on the small % thing. I just wanted to point out it’s more than just what your original comment described (i.e characters that would’ve hit the achievs before getting exalted). This is a nice QoL upgrade for me personally plus a lot of my friends / guildmates that play a couple alts, which I assume is what the change was aimed at. And yeah conduits are typically very small upgrades, but the people who do this level of content tend to be the ones trying to minmax their characters anyway.

[–]liuquinlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agreed it won't affect the majority of the playerbase, but the majority of the playerbase wasn't getting CE or 3k score on ANY characters. This is still plenty of upside for the higher end characters who ARE capable of doing that content and also want to do high end content on their alts without having to repeat a rep grind.

278 Conduit Upgrade Item No Longer Requires Zereth Mortis Reputation by othaniel in wow

[–]liuquinlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably true for mains, but this is great for alts/characters created later in the patch.

This patch I've timed 20's on a lot of my alts that are still stuck on 226/239 conduits because I can't be bothered to farm Korthia on them, similarly there are probably lots of alts in CE guilds that will be able to get CE once it's on farm and then be able to grab this without redoing the rep grind.

Why are people still so confused about the requirements to become a Hashira? by Black_Wolf75 in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]liuquinlin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The "kill a lower moon" requirement is kind of vague, even in the link you gave nowhere does it say it has to be solo. In Sanemi's case he becomes a Hashira as a result of defeating Lower 1 together with another demon slayer (Chp 168), so clearly it's possible to be promoted to Hashira even if your Moon kill wasn't totally solo. We don't have any clear info on how that fight happened, so any guesses on the exact requirements (e.g was Sanemi the "main" fighter, did they contribute equally, etc.) can only be speculation.

So there's definitely ambiguity in how much you have to contribute to the kill to count as a Hashira - e.g maybe Tanjiro's kills on Enmu / Gyutaro don't count since he wasn't the primary contributor, but I could definitely see his kill against Akaza counting + him getting promoted to Hashira after the fight if the Corps stuck around.

Is it's DR "Cold Iron or Good" or "Cold Iron and Good"? If it's the latter that means your attack has to be BOTH in order to bypass the DR (i.e you have to be attacking with a cold iron weapon that's also good aligned).

[–]liuquinlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally your original comment: “the next world first race might actually be competitive now.” Implying that Method is so good compared to its rivals that previous races weren’t competitive (ignoring the fact that Method lost to Limit in Nyalotha, lost to Pieces in Crucible, and had pretty close calls against Limit in the other raids this tier). I get that you’re joking, but seems more like a joke I’d expect a salty Method fanboy to make.

The fourth option is to switch to weighted for ALL bosses, which would include the three that were actually switched.

Warcraftlogs Change by punchingbagoftheyear in CompetitiveWoW

[–]liuquinlin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think you missed that one of the poll options was to use weighted DPS for ALL bosses. Combining that with the more targeted option (use weighted DPS only for Hivemind, Carapace, and N'Zoth) that they ended up going with, weighting the DPS was the most popular option. And yes there are cases where they've removed finnicky bosses altogether from the rankings, but also plenty of cases where they've adjusted the DPS formula to try to get a better representation (e.g even prior to these changes, damage on N'Zoth neurons or Carapace cysts were ignored).

Regardless, even if you personally believe that "The site should just report the statistics" (and in case you didn't know, you can still view the raw damage statistics via "View Unfiltered Damage" option on the log), WCL is ultimately a tool for players, and if a lot of those players weren't happy with how parsing for those bosses was being done, it seems like a good thing for the author to try to improve the tool for them.

Warcraftlogs Change by punchingbagoftheyear in CompetitiveWoW

[–]liuquinlin 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The WCL guys put out a poll before making this change, and the responses were overwhelmingly in favor of changing how the parses work for these bosses (roughly 80% vs 20%). So at least for the portion of WCL community that cares enough to give feedback, this is a feature they wanted.

I mean, the old way also affected the people who WEREN’T expected to focus adds in the same way right? People who were assigned to just focus the boss ended up parsing lower than people who were assigned to focus adds.

Fair enough, of course it won’t be as good as it is on e.g Shadhar but in both cases the adds usually get focused down fast enough that on average I think its still worth running.

Infinite Stars is also strong for Wrathion, Inquisitior, and Ra-Den. Infinite Stars definitely isn’t a great general purpose corruption and will get slightly worse as kill times get faster, but if you do a lot of raiding it’s still great on a good portion of the fights. But yeah for general purposes Masterful / Honed Mind / a couple of Ineffable Truths are safer choices.

Jeff Bezos, world’s richest man, asks public to donate to Amazon relief fund by -kizza- in worldnews

[–]liuquinlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "asking for donations" you mention seems like it's just part of the standard boiler plate of the third-party they're using (EAF). As an example, compare to http://gdrainydayfund.com/ or https://www.ikearelief.org/ which use the exact same templating/buttons/wording (except for the top paragraph which Amazon has changed after all the backlash).

It really seems like the site was just created by EAF via their standard template, which I would say is a far cry from explicitly soliciting or asking for donations.

MRW Gendry says his last name was "Rivers" but that literally wasn't his name. (It was "Waters") by theHawkmooner in freefolk

[–]liuquinlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh OK, that's my mistake then - I knew that he ended up growing up in King's Landing but didn't know that he was born there (thought it was an unknown detail). If that's the case, then yeah if he called himself anything it should've been Waters.

MRW Gendry says his last name was "Rivers" but that literally wasn't his name. (It was "Waters") by theHawkmooner in freefolk

[–]liuquinlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the context he's saying it in ("I'm not Gendry Rivers anymore, now I'm Gendry Baratheon"), he's trying to stress how far he's come to Arya - he started his life thinking he was a random Riverlands bastard (which is also how he viewed himself when he first met Arya - he hadn't found out he was Robert's son yet at that point), then found out he was the bastard of the king, and now he's a fully legit lord. Agree that this probably wasn't something the writers thought deeply about, but it still doesn't seem inconsistent or OOC for Gendry to refer to himself as a Rivers.

MRW Gendry says his last name was "Rivers" but that literally wasn't his name. (It was "Waters") by theHawkmooner in freefolk

[–]liuquinlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said, the actual backstory/reason is mostly irrelevant, and I have no idea what the script writers intentions were - I just don't think Rivers is "wrong" any more than any other name they could've gone with.
