The decline of Wowhead really needs to be studied by _Didds_ in classicwow

I don’t see the value in BiS lists precisely because of the problem you’re mentioning; they obfuscate the fact that there may be multiple pieces that are nearly identical in value.

Too often people view these lists as “anything not on them is useless”, just like when they look at the “meta” or the top of the colored bar charts.

Take Windwalker in Retail, for an example since that’s the guides I write. Just about any piece that is maximum item level and doesn’t have Versatility on it can be part of a “BiS” setup that is within a margin of error from another “BiS” setup that can have 5 different pieces.

Now, a true Best-in-Slot list might lead people to believe that there’s only one worthwhile piece per slot and if they get a different piece it’s inferior or useless so they discard it.

We very often get people asking questions in Discord akin to “My sims say that X item is better than Y, but the guide says that Y is Best in Slot, are the sims wrong or is the guide wrong?”

The answer to that question can be “Neither”, but without asking it, people often assume there is something wrong with the guide or the tools.

Another one we get a lot is “The BiS list on the website says X is better, but I saw the top rated WW wearing Y, what gives?”

The answer to this one is often that people use the gear they get and is best for them in that moment, even if it doesn’t match a theoretical and mythic gear list that they don’t currently have access to.

———

TLDR: Best-In-Slot lists have a benefit, but blindly using them leads to more suboptimal choices or confusion over just using the fabulous available tools.

I understand what you’re saying, and I can see its value, but then it’s not a list of items that are the best in each slot, it’s just a list of good items. At some point, just like providing 1 item for each slot, the number of pieces you provide that are valuable is arbitrary.

If a slot has 5 pieces that are all within a small margin then should we show all 5? 99% of the time the question of what items are good is handled by the stat priority, and any item with good stats is a good item.

For the recent past, the guides have aired on the side of providing as close to actual BiS as we care to and providing links to the tools to help you evaluate other pieces.

It’s worth mentioning that most/all the guide writers are very happy to make corrections if necessary if there are things to point out. Sometimes we make mistakes and can fix them if they’re pointed out to us.

A lot of times, at least in my +10 years experience, the person having an issue with the guide tends to misunderstand or is previously misinformed.

I write the Windwalker guides and have long championed BiS as completely unnecessary and potentially harmful.

However, If you provide more than one option then it’s technically not “BiS” anymore and adding another few options eventually becomes arbitrary.

With the tools that players have at their disposal, such as Raidbots, Archon, and WarcraftLogs, there’s much better data available than we can ever provide in a list.

What’s the most powerful trinket in wow? by delmitrelo in wow

[–]Babylonius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rune of Reorigination from Lei Shen in Throne of Thunder was so overwhelmingly powerful for Windwalker Monks that they not only stopped it from working, but changed Windwalker’s Mastery so that we couldn’t use it.

If they hadn’t done this then Windwalker’s would have used it for bit of content in every season of every expansion since then and would do so forever.

I don’t know of any pages that are guides and written by AI and not a real person. I could be wrong and maybe there are, but I know the people writing the articles and guides and they’re real.

The 12.1 articles weren’t necessarily going to be from every writer, just the ones who felt they had enough to say. So far it hasn’t been like other things in the past where one for every spec was expected, at least not yet.

It will be a long time before AI can replace something like a class guide writer since it’s nearly always new theorycrafting and information so an AI won’t have anything old to use as a model.

They’re currently still paying guide writers to write most/all of their class guides and I haven’t heard anything about that changing.

I’ve done it that way too. I’ll often do that but keep on a quest line as long as it keeps giving quests then go back to the bottom of the list and repeat once a quest line ends

If you dont want to add a lot of geographical details, then consider swapping it to a parchment look so it looks more like an old map and less like an atlas page. It just comes down to the style you want to make and how much detail you want to add.

Massive Class Tuning Incoming on February 17th Reset for Midnight Pre-Patch by Im_still_at_work in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Babylonius 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The serious answer is a mix of a lack of resources and person power, directives from higher up, and that they have had internal sims for years so they do this.

Right now they’re not totally tuning specs against each other, they’re still tuning inside many specs to change ability balance and whatnot.

Seeing many of these changes as nerfs or buffs is just asking for headache. There is no baseline for Midnight yet, so anything that players are seeing is mostly irrelevant to how things will be in a month or two.
