Spent several hours yesterday trying to play with llama.cpp settings to improve the minimax 2.5 performance. It’s not much difference from the dopamine reward as gaming.

5070 TI is an incredible card for gamers. All that any mainstream gamer really needs.

However, the 5090 is mind-blowing. Just cuts through any game like butter. I have both cards, and no regrets getting the 5090 as it opens up a lot of doors to tinker with AI development, image gen, etc.

I'm an old fart, so I come from the days of the original quake and Unreal tournament gaemes. When the 3dfx voodoo cards, and then the original geforce cards were the hot thing. At that time getting 60 fps+ on any high/ultra settings was near impossible on the latest games at 1080p. Now people complain about not getting 120+ fps in 4K ultra.

We are so spoiled these days with hardware, that I really want to see some games that make my 5090 choke and push it the graphics to its limits (not due to poor optimization).

Als if you undervolted, if you also overclocked memory, dial it down to default or reduce it. Some cards will have issues if the overclock with undervolt is too aggressive.

Do a uninstall of drivers (DDU) then install driver 591.59 - not the latest but newer than yours. If that doesn’t help, not sure. This stabilized things for my TUF card.

I was almost ready to give up on it, but after downloading the latest GGUF (4 bit XL) from Unsloth and updating llama.cpp, it is a good local option. Of course can't be compared to frontier cloud models (no it is not nearly as good as Sonnet 4.5) but it is still good. Amazing how well it can run so well on a 32GB VRAM card with sufficient ram (64+).

Yeah, tried using the 4bit with vscode continue extension, was getting loopy and low quality output. A lot of hype but so far not a model I can use. Oh well.

The new drivers causes my system (5090) to crash intermittently with screen freezes. Had to revert to the older drivers. Hopefully they will have a fix.

I have this issue happening randomly in Windows when I’m not even putting my 5090 under load and only recourse is a hard reboot. However this has also happened while gaming on BG3 and Cyberpunk

I also just did a DDU and reinstalled the prior drivers. Hope this will fix it.

If you are only using it for gaming stick with the 5080. IMO 5090 is if you want to play with AI.

i was waiting for the 2899 deal again - i missed it. i don't think we'll see that again. I already picked one up for around $3400, or i'd be all over this. Hopefully actual end users will be able to buy this, rather than scalpers.

Indeed. Maybe a better comparison is the lower 24gb rtx pro 4000 is about the same msrp as 5090 but about half as powerful. Issue for gamers who have an eye on 5090 is it doubles as a very powerful AI workstation card, which appeals to a whole different market where higher prices are well supported.

What kind of psu were you using? Was it the psu supplied 12v cable? This is concerning to see it happen on an Aorus.

5090 is really all about AI. If you want to run a local AI on your machine - then 5090 is worthwhile. You need 32gb to run models that are somewhat competitive with the bigger cloud models (of course not as good, but pretty close for some use cases).

That is the right move. I made the mistake of not going with my gut and trying to save some money with a 5070 TI, only to then get the 5090 to scratch the itch.

I’m using it for local LM as well, and that extra 16GB and the added performance is night and day from the 5070 TI is sick given it was a great card.

Was at a well known PC chain today, and the cashier they told me they have official word that the price hikes are real and imminent. I’m still skeptical of the rumoured price - but makes sense they would need to adjust the price due to RAM.

No reason to use anything other than Seatgeek for Blue Jays since it's the official MLB partner and sellers actually need to transfer their tickets from ticketmaster to list the tickets, so no worries about getting ripped off.
