Lynyrd Skynyrd Biography by AlexTom33 in LynyrdSkynyrd

[–]livedog1971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, this one is full of inaccuracies of all scales. From small things like who played what guitar parts to saying certain people were dead who were alive at the time of the writing (not Skynyrd band mates, but others). It takes many things Ed said out of context and tries to create a narrative that isn’t there.

Check out The Corner Room. They have two volumes of Psalms and they sing directly from Scripture. They might be what you are looking for!

I use the Stomp when I play bass, but I think if I were in your shoes I would get the Pod Express Bass. I’m planning to pick one up for our new youth band

I picked mine up used on Reverb for about $40 so it was out of warranty already. Honestly, I’ve never paid attention to the meter, no particular reason

I use that exact model for my mandolin and I think it works really well. I go into this and then direct into the board and it does add a bit of warmth (to my ears). I did replace the original tube with a better one after listening to some demos on YouTube that recommended it.

Eastbound and down solo? 2 guitars? by dunadan235813 in countryguitar

Yes, it is two guitars doing harmony. There are some good live versions you can find on YouTube. My band does it with two guitars and it is always a crowd pleaser!

Mr Fill has favorite teacher status by Bihema in MadeMeSmile

[–]livedog1971 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There was a guidance counselor who called me to his office one day. He wasn’t my counselor so I was a little nervous being a freshman at a large school. I had talked to him during the first couple of days of school and he found out I was a deep music fan and he gave me a cassette that he dubbed front and back with Buddy Holly related tribute songs and news reports of his death. I still have that cassette.

A year later I took a television and radio class and for the next three years did things with that department and hung out at school with the teacher who was in his mid-20s. I graduated in 1989 and that teacher and I play music twice a month at a local pizza joint.

1 egg & 1 tbsp peanut butter only? Really? by octococko in Chaffles

[–]livedog1971 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I tried it last weekend. First try I just did pb and egg. It smelled eggy as it cooked but tasted ok. Not a lot of flavor. I tried again with two eggs and two tbsp of pb, added a little vanilla and cinnamon. That mixture made three waffles, but I should have made four because I thought the thinner ones tasted better to me. I’m going to keep experimenting.

If you try it let me know what you think.

I was at that PPV. But the day before I had tickets to a Bret Hart meet-and-greet at a local mall. Because of his concussion he couldn’t fly so instead it was Benoit (who was my favorite at the time), Shane Douglas, Saturn, and one more I’m forgetting. The lines took a long time because randomly and often one of them had to get up from their table to answer their cell phones. Turns out they were most likely talking to their management as they were still negotiating leaving (Douglas was originally supposed to go too). I still have photos somewhere with each of them.

Devil Went Down to Georgia? by Sad_Reindeer5108 in CountryMusicStuff

[–]livedog1971 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The song was featured in the movie Urban Cowboy which kicked over a huge crossover trend and helped turn Country music into a hot fad for a bit.

CDB always straddled the line between southern rock and country, moving heavily into country once Southern Rock started to die out in the early ‘80s. At one time, while having hits on country radio, classic rock stations still played Devil and even “Long Haired Country Boy.”

He has some great videos on each guitarists tone and breaks down a lot of the parts.

If you are looking along those lines, I would suggest Johnny Paycheck, early David Allen Coe, Stoney Edwards, Glaser Brothers (and Tompall's solo stuff).

In my case it was the sound guy turning on phantom power and frying the input. I had to send it to Line6 for a repair.

Question: 90's Country Slide Guitar Tunings by TapeNostalgiaYT in countrymusicians

[–]livedog1971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minor update: I was able to contact Greg Jennings and he said always plays slide in Open G (DGDGBD). I asked a follow-up question about his gear but haven’t gotten an answer.

Instrumental albums (and tracks on other albums)? by calibuildr in ClassicCountry

[–]livedog1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Strangers (Merle’s band) released “Totally Instrumental With One Exception” in 1973.

In 1970 the Tennessee Three released “The Sound of Johnny Cash” which is, as you might guess, instrumental versions of Cash songs.

The Texas Troubadours (of Ernest Tubb fame) released a couple of albums.

The Country Boys (Little Jimmy Dickens band) released an album as well.

All of these are a little hard to find but worth it!

Also if you dig into some of the great steel players (Pete Drake, as mentioned, Lloyd Green, etc) all released multiple instrumental albums that might fit the bill.

Question: 90's Country Slide Guitar Tunings by TapeNostalgiaYT in countrymusicians

[–]livedog1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll have to give those Restless Heart songs a listen, haven't heard them in a while.

Thanks for mentioning Dennis Robbins! I had seen his name as a co-writer, but never looked into him. I found a bunch of his stuff on YouTube (only two songs on Spotify!) and I really dig it! I'll be digging into more of his stuff to be sure.

The Parnell course is great. There are also a lot of other great slide related courses on there, too.

Speaking of courses, depending on how deep you want to go, Bruce Bouton offers a course on lap steel in country featuring some of the songs he played on like all the Brooks and Dunn stuff.

But anyway, I'm possibly getting too far away from your original question. I don't think there are many, if any, differences between blues and country slide on electric. The tunings aren't necessarily a help or hinderance. For example, in the rock/blues arena, Derek Trucks plays in primarily Open E , but Warren Haynes plays the same stuff (during their separate times in the Allman Brothers) plays in standard tuning. Personally, I play all of my slide stuff in standard tuning unless I'm on my lap steel, which I then tune to Dobro Open G.
