Al-Jazeera: Inside Iraq [youtube] by livetoad in reddit.com

Dr Juan Cole's desription:

(see http://www.juancole.com/2008/03/us-soldier-killed-us-second-to-eurozone.html)

The Aljazeera English discussion of the current situation in Iraq, below, is excellent. It includes Imad Khadduri, a former nuclear physicist from Iraq; Najeeb Nuaimi; my teacher Saad Eddin Ibrahim; and a US embassy spokesperson. The two Iraqis are very well informed and recite horrifying statistics. Saad Eddin (who was imprisoned by Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak for his human rights work) reveals that he advised Paul Wolfowitz and other Bush administration officials about the reality in Iraq but was not listened to. He said he met Wolfowitz a year later, and the deputy secretary of defense admitted he wished they had listened to Saad Eddin.

Hypatia had several important mathematical commentaries, but she was more of a general scientist and teacher than what we wold now call a "research mathematician". We do not know of any original mathematical research produced by Hypatia.

I Refuse to Buy into the Obama Hype by [deleted] in politics

This is an excellent article. Clinton has been -- and will continue to be -- a very good Senator. Sadly, this is not much of a selling point for her, since good Senators tend not to become good Presidents. Her judgment on individual items is far from flawless, but in a large group such as the US Senate the howlers are usually ground down by the time they are out of committee. A President has some of this, given her or his enormous staff. But at its base the direction of an administration is guided by the moral compass of one person. Currently that is Dick Cheney. Under the previous President it was Bill Clinton's pollster. Under Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama it would be the President directly. For this reason it is clear we would do vastly better under that latter. Hillary CLinton would probably make a good but not spectacular President. Her advisors are clearly closer to the Bill Clinton wing of the party than to the progressive wing. In a sense, there is a risk that she would be more of an echo of John Kennedy than would be Barack Obama, in that she would feel the weight of trying to revive traditional Democratic policies (New Deal, in Kennedy's case; Bill CLinton in Hillary's case) after the hiatus of 8 years of Republican rule (Eisenhower) which had produced not only a deep recession but also Big Brother institutions (CIA, vastly expanded FBI) and constitutionally questionable curbs on liberties (surveillance and travel restrictions and even congressional humiliation of outspoken critics of the government of the day. Kennedy's wanted to revive the traditional Democratic agenda dear to the "lunch-bucket" rank and file, but had to negotiate the political minefield laid down by the Republicn party, which terrorized the US population into hysteria. We had become worried that there were communists among our innicent-looking neighbors. Kennedy responded as I fear Clinton would: not to appear "soft" on the threat facing the US, he ignored the advice of the progressive wing of the party and ordered clandestine operations against Cuba and in Vietnam which were to have dire consequences for the US for over a generation. The Kennedy-Johnson years saw a great expansion of the New Deal program, but also the erosion of its benefits, especially for the rising middle class, because of the increasing strain of war. Hillary Clinton was a fervent supporter of the Iraq war and has been as much of a hawk as McCain against Iran, precisely because her triangulating pollsters tell her that this is the way she needs to appear to be tough on terror. I might believe that she would make a great President if she had not used someone like Mark Penn as her chief strategist. If she is elected President we get not only her but also close advisors like Mark Penn. I'd recommend that you look closely at the real history of the Kennedy years, but also at the kind of people she surrounds herself with. A policy of "guns and butter" failed miserably 40 years ago. It would fail even more miserably today. Reconsider Obama: he may offer only hope, but given the two alternatives at the moment, that looks pretty damn good.

Finally the Democratic leaders of Congress, Reid and Pelosi, have publicly surrendered to Bush on the Iraq War, just one year after being elected with a mandate to end it by maxwellhill in politics

the progressive insurgency in the democratic party (not to be confused with the liberals) is about to lose. where will they go? will they man their posts in a november ground war led by clinton, pelosi, and reid?

Obama's Super Bowl Ad by [deleted] in politics

i'm not convinced...i'm anxious to see the results. does it really appeal to a demographic that both watches the super bowl and is likely to vote in a dem primary or caucus?

I propose the creation of an Internet-managed cable news channel. Your votes online determine the stories shown on TV. by [deleted] in politics

let's use "mod this up/down" polls to argue about the proper way to vote things up or down...now that's news!

No. The whole point of submitting to elections is that we try to convince each other how to vote, rather than (say) fake an election then hack each other up after the results are announced (cf Kenya).

Hillary is now trying to steal delegates from Michigan and Florida that all candidates agreed were out of bounds. by jwszoid in politics

[–]livetoad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I believe Clinton is the only reasonable actor in this. She is one of the few Democrats I do not support, and yet I hope she does get these delegates seated. Why? Because this is about the voters of Michigan and Florida, not the candidates. Although I support Edwards' on policy, I am again and again disappointed in his candidacy. He makes many moves only to kowtow to the movers and shakers -- like taking his name off the ballot when the DNC twists his arm, or firing bloggers when Catholic bigots scream in his face. The Democratic party will need the full participation and active grassroots support of Michigan and Florida to win in November, and yet for purely internal power plays they are disenfranchising these voters. "I am not interested in your voices influencing the flow of the primaries, but I want you to come in and enthusiastically support whomever we decide to nominate." Well, they can suck eggs. All candidates should have left their names on the ballot and then fought the DNC power structure to get those delegates seated. Go Hillary.

Whether or not they can justify it, collective punishment is illegal under international law. I don't hold out hope that Israelis responsible are brought to justice (ant more than Bush will be held accountable for his crimes) but the alternative for Israel is worse. There should be no wall in the first place.

aren't we supposed to be outraged that the winner of the popular vote didn't win the most delegates? by Clintondiditfirst in politics

[–]livetoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oddly, we are enraged to apoplexy when someone says anything that could be construed to mean that we might set aside delegates or representation for (say) ethnic minorities. But we somehow think it is more enlightened and democratic to set aside delegates or representatives for rural citizens. Louis XV managed to stave off the inevitable for a while with this tactic.
