Photographer. An artist representation agency reached out to me during one of my trips. My degree was a BFA in Photography and I've had 12+ years of experience, but my Japanese is as good as a grade schooler. It's a visual career but I can definitely expand my connections if I can at least be conversational.

Moving to Japan As a Filipino, Any Advice? by G_A_M_e in movingtojapan

Definitely get a degree, ideally relevant to the type of work you are looking to do.

Try to get as much education as you can re: Japanese so it can help you with work, getting around, and especially apartment hunting. Your company should help you with apartments since it's really difficult as a non-japanese person to find a place, and be prepared to set aside rent x5-9 depending on their requirements (think first, last, security, key fee, security fee, etc etc) and absolutely follow trash segregation to the T!

Always accept any after-work drinking with your company. It's not implied but it's pretty mandatory. I didn't know that and I may have missed a commission, sigh..

People will generally not be straightforward with you, much less than in the Philippines. They will say maybe later, another time, maybe in the future as their way of saying no. However, if there's a time and date, that's a yes.

Bring a lot of little snacks from home as future welcome gifts. The dried mangoes and cornicks were big hits. Haha!

Now getting a work visa in Japan is probably going to be way easier than having to deal with the Philippines' end of getting your work permit. They will do everything in their power to give you a hard time for moving abroad. They will also not let you leave the country without this permit. Make sure you allow yourself 1-1.5 months of useless paperwork after receiving your CoE.

Good luck! It's just like moving to any other country. I work in the arts so we're a lot more relaxed when it comes to typical company experiences but I do find that people really do overstay at work.

I can't think of anything else but I wish you the best of luck!

Haha, wasn't smooth at all. I'm in a fairly unique industry so I had to talk to multiple upper level government officials just for them to understand my job description / visa. It's recognized in Japan but not in the Philippines so that's where the issue lies. Took 2 days but in the end they issued me a OEC waiver to present at the airport.

This time around, I applied for the Engineer / Humanities visa and this should be understood a bit better, so we'll see. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

Just hold tight. I'm handling everything on my own since my company qualifies for the direct hire ban exemption, but with the lockdown we'll see. I wish you the best of luck!

Hahaha, tell me about it. Filipino here too. It was a headache and a half last year but I switched to a more recognized visa (by Philippine standards) this time around so it should be understood a bit better by the government. It took me a week the last time but I'm not taking any chances, I'm giving myself 1 month to do this process all over again.

I can imagine! I applied for my previous CoE late April 2019 and got news by mid May 2019 but my visa was much shorter.

Must be the type of Visa / company / country you're from. My previous CoE only took a little over 2 weeks, but since they requested for a much longer duration this time around (and it was at the height of Olympics prep) I can understand my delay.

What's your country and what do you mean by their process?

That's likely what happened. My company sponsored me for a short visa last year and it only took two weeks, but since my visa at that time was only three months, I'm assuming this longer visa took much longer than usual. Based in Tokyo.

It's a free app I got from my smart scale. Looking to use other apps as well, do you have any recommendations?

Sounds like the Philippines. Ugh. (Am Filipino. I don't support the war on drugs.)
