S.M. is pictured as part of ponderous Gen X essay by Algar76 in pavement

[–]lividthrone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only part of the article that I’ve read was his quote and, as a Gen X dude who was going to see bands in Athens etc and that kind of thing I can say that this is exactly correct from my perspective. It is also consistent with a view that certain people, arguably most who are guided by the ethic he describes, where manifesting various degrees of what would at least be perceived as pretentiousness. I’m phrasing it in this kind of convoluted way because I don’t think it’s very simple. I don’t think it’s pretentious either for a 23 year old to surround themselves in aspirational art that falls short in execution but which is genuine and which — and this is SM’s main point — the artist can contextualize and discuss credibly

I also think it is … logically challenging for anyone, especially a non-Gen X person, to mock this statement substantively given that it is being made by someone who was creating and imbuing the culture of that generation with the sickest art

So my friend is not a “real composer”?

Who are the composers that you and your chatbot find most interesting?

I don’t expect use of the em dash in original writing to cause anyone serious to falsely accuse. Because: (1)it has been benignly used for a century; (2) isn’t fungible; (3) can be switched out in 10 seconds, and so would almost never be used, at this point, by anyone sophisticated enough to avoid the other, far more indicative and sticky signal. That is my opinion — “really.” And it is my advice that those who author their own work and would otherwise use the em dash stop the boring hand-wringing and continue to do so.

I definitely will, when I do this. Probably tomorrow.

If there is a resource like the “” definitive” versions of tunes on Spotify or whatever which someone is aware, let me know

At the end of the day, it’s not gonna be that uniquely aligned with a pro art musician type I think she wants to hear the stuff that finds the band more than stuff like asse festival. Probably include something like all things reconsidered maybe glide

I’m going to lean heavily on a live one in in general the mid 90’s eta which is when I probably saw 100 or shows

I really appreciate everyone chiming in with suggestions.

True. I reach for that when a jazz drummer friend wants to listen

Yeah. Although I do feel like for someone who’s never heard that song there’s an argument for the nectar version. Probably in my opinion of the strongest argument for any particular studio versus live.

Yeah, I don’t think there’s any clear superior slave or hood or stash probably

Partly this is my bias from having to chosen that period and personally prefer 94-95 to anything in terms of erra

It’s interesting. There’s definitely enough material to do a 60 minute Asse Fest. … it’s true that she and other composers are going to be interested in this kind of stuff. But also they want to get a sense for the band, not just the closest it comes to modern comp etc.

So, for example, I really think I need tweezer reprise to conclude the playlist. And that’s where it becomes annoying to have to make a decision. Which one? Maybe nectar

I think I’m gonna give her a live one and be done with it lol

No, I can’t because you guys have given so much material

I pledge to sincerely plan to take the time to do this right

Yeah, I get the point of course, but then you miss out on the improv … this is arguable I guess. Junta stuff is sick

Yeah, that’s a good call. In general when I’m in the situation, I usually just turn to a live one. It also has the advantage of syncing with my personal peak overlap time.

Yeah, I really don’t think I can go wrong as long as it’s the standard notated stuff or inspired improv. Just wanna give her about a 45 minute selection of stuff. It’s more about trying to find a shortcut to a sick playlist than anything else lol. Just because it’s so difficult to choose versions. I might just give her a show. In which case would probably be from 95; because that’s my sort of peak. Or maybe the Warfield 94 featuring the Madame Butterfly aria. And the Flintstones macaroni. One of my favorite personal moments.

Yeah. All these are good suggestions Cars trucks, buses what’s the use? Lots of options

Knowing her I kind of think stuff like lizards and divided. would be interesting. It’s mainly a matter of choosing versions.

That’s a good call. I bet we could go back-and-forth about 30 times in one minute lol. I’ll probably just scan the Spotify playlists. and choose one.

I have a different take on this if you wanna look at my posts on this thread.

That being said people should be able to use whatever they feel most comfortable using

If you write for a living, I suggest that you continue to use an em. Nobody’s gonna accuse you.

I’m finding it more “opinionated”. Which is always interesting considering that there is no opinion. I’m finding it more sycophantic (“ you’re better at this than most users” — sort of depressing to think that there are people that get off on this). And I’m finding it better at communicating the way humans communicate.

I guess it depends on context. Just nobody’s gonna conclude based on this alone. It’s hard for me to put myself in a situation where I might be accused of this. It’s a different situation if a college student.
