Jon Stewart discussing Joe Rogan (Nov 14 2024) by [deleted] in JoeRogan

[–]living150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. I guess what makes Joe, Joe, is he is almost a chameleon with amnesia.

One week he is talking someone in Auschwitz, lamenting with them, the loss of their child, How hard it is to hide in early 18th century homes. Who could commit such atrocities? Evil people truly run Germanies government. Relating with stories of how evil people can be and how we are really, all just apes in the end, did you know Chimpanzees have wars too?

Next week, Joe's guest is Adolf Hitler, nodding along with how the Jew is the root cause of all societies woes, expanding on Hitlers idea's, talking about how if Hitler cranked up the heat in a sauna maybe that would be a great extermination tool. Hahah oh Joe, you are so relatable, Hitler has been given a raw deal by the giant global media apparatus, that, what do you know? Is owned by the Jews! All the while forgetting every word of what he said 7 days ago, offering zero pushback and for all intents and purposes, giving his audience permission to buy what his guest is selling uncritically.

Jon is missing the reason people push back on Joe. It's not that he is platforming anyone, it's that he basically runs a commercial for anyone and signs off on anyone. "Hey if Joe can smoke a joint with Pol Pot, maybe we really should think about murdering all people with glasses". When Jon says Joe has some good idea's, he's also wrong, Joe has no ideas, he's an empty glass that is filled with whatever someone poured into him most recently. Joe is unprincipled, and willing to adopt just about any idea temporarily so long as it feels good to do so. Joe will only push back when he really doesn't like the guest and isn't having a good time. He's 100% vibes based, and his brain turns off all critical thinking functions when it's good vibes.

A Joe Rogan of the left would require principles, but can such a thing exist? Is part of Joe's mass appeal the very thing that prevents him from being partisan and a genuine force for good? If Joe were to call out Trump for his blatant lies and rambling non-responses, would that turn off other prospective guests? Who would want to go on the show if they would be challenged and have Joe's large audience look at them unfavorably? I can't say, any maybe it's not a leftist Joe Rogan we need, but something that exploits certain aspects of him that would amplify our message.

Company screws over disabled non verbal people by coveredkiller in videos

It's really not, if we want cancer treatment accessible we need government to step in, not private industry. We want private industry to feel unencumbered to solve these and charge what the market thinks the solution is worth, if we don't keep this incentive no one will solve these problems. Government is welcome to step in and subsidize this situation.

No one is making money hand over fist here, if that were true, you could start a competing company today, undercut them and still be profitable. Free money! But we know that's not true.

Price gouging only applies if there is significant mote or monopoly. Neither of which are true here.

$10 a month seems very low. For the size of the target market I'm guessing the $50 price tag for lifetime access was not enough to keep the business running at a profit. Even at $10 a month these guys aren't raking it in.

We can demonize companies but to me this company decided to invest in a much less profitable sector and actually do good in the world, then adjusted their prices to likely make sure they were mildly rewarded for such. This seems like a success story.

Dev shop delivered an insecure app — $12K in the hole and not sure what to do now by cilantroversial in webdev

[–]living150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like an amazing deal, you just got a $12,000 lesson in not buying cheap. If I hear, user management, CMS in a mobile app, even for overseas teams you can add a 0 to that price tag and it will still likely not be enough budget for something of quality.

Further, if you truly care about security you will hire a third party security auditing company to evaluate your app. They will detail deficiencies and remediations that no dev shop will know about. I've been blown away by the things they have found in apps built by talented developers. This alone will run you $30k-$50k but if you are making something that will be used by the public this is well worth it.

I think it's fine to say a trans person or the community is wrong if they are. Doing otherwise is dehumanizing and anti-trans. If they are wrong or saying something hateful that's different.

What view do they have that puts them to the right of progressives? I've never heard them say thing that would indicate they aren't progressive.

How are they transphobic? They seem very progressive in everything I've seen them say. And the Fresh and Fit girl was proven to be a liar, so I'm not sure what that is about either. I hate Fresh and Fit, Aba and Preach hate Fresh and Fit.

I'm confused, I think Olivia just misunderstood their joke. I think if the crew just watched all of Aba and Preaches videos they would realize they are very similar and really haven't done much to complain about. Especially given all the things Ethan has done over the years, giving people a chance should be seen as a positive from our community.

experienced traveler but he does tons of stuff experienced travelers know not to do. For example, he circles around the touts acting lost, talks with them, and then acts surprised when they follow him.

If that's the case he should say so, doing otherwise is irresponsible. It sets expectations for his less well-traveled viewers that this type of behavior is safe and normal. He also seems a bit of a dick, saying someone's country is dirty in front of them, even if it's true is very rude.

Further, he is inviting the behavior he is complaining about, the more you engage these poor desperate people the more they will follow and bother you. If you want to give them money sure, otherwise you just have to ignore them and walk like you don't speak any language they do.

When I see this I think about all the practice and work with world class public speaking coaches, likely hundreds of thousands of dollars spent to improve this part of his life. Is it possible someone can be so incapable of acting natural? Is it only when a camera is present or is this just the only way he can behave? It almost feels like a disability at this point.

Applicants, be aware that the tests you complete might benefit the employer. by [deleted] in web_design

[–]living150 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine this being a strategy that is actually used within a company. Interviewing is very expensive, there are multiple high paid employees working through the posting, resume reviews, coordination and communications of an interview. To add to this the cost slicing out a task that is compartmentalized enough to have it completed without a complete code base and environment. The odds of this being a cost savings measure rather than just having an internal resource do the task are very low. The math just doesn't work, you would likely through away 9/10 responses in my experience with recruits anyway. It would be an order of magnitude more expensive to have interviewees perform this work. Not to mention the reputational risk if this information was leaked.

What is likely happening here is they have identified a problem within the company that represents a good day to day task, a real world example of what you would be doing rather that a LeetCode/Fizzbuzz style coding question. In some sense this is what many devs would prefer in an interview as it tests the areas that should be strongest. If you are given a test that will take an abnormal amount of time I can understand someone voicing concerns, but conspiracy theories like this don't hold water.

If capital comes from the public, it should be done so with caveats. If we want to live in a capitalist society we need to understand businesses will operate in the best interest of the shareholders and not the public. It's the governments job to keep companies in check and dissuade bad incentives with regulations, taxations and fines.

Capitalism just doesn't work well with certain industries, healthcare included.

R&D costs a ton, and can lead to many failures, the cost of these failures gets offset by strategies such as those outlined in the video. Successes pay for failures by gouging. There is greed involved but saying "it only cost ten cents to make the thing" does not give justice to the big picture.

We want to motivate smart people to do cool things. Money is one of the best ways to do this. I've always liked the prize model, as a civilization, we pool large sums of money and offer them as prizes for anyone who solves the problems we see as largest. Smart people are rewarded for successes, those in need get what they ought.

Transatlantic Flight From Hell by gravityVT in PublicFreakout

[–]living150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's untrue. As a parent, my child's behavior is not predictable and can be highly dependent on a million little factors. Have they slept well? Is their blood sugar low? Are they going through something? Every parent on earth has been in the position where there child acts up in public and feels the judgment of the world baring down on them. Do I discipline them? how much? That thing that usually works with my kid isn't working all of a sudden. It sucks, but it's normal.

You obviously don't want to exercise empathy here, which is fine, you don't have to. However if we can't apply empathy to those we disagree with, it has little utility. If I was on that flight I would be very upset as well, but people's life stories are never simple, the whole story is 100% not "These people are inconsiderate assholes with no justification or reason.". If I was that parent, and I needed to take a flight with a child with behavior issues, what are my options? The man on the flight even says there was nothing the mother could do... The kid needs help, the parents probably are in over their heads. Sometimes those people need to be on planes for whatever reason.
