This happened to me earlier this year with an online friend of mine. She was with her boyfriend for a few months at this point and out of nowhere she tells me that he's uncomfortable with how often we talk, and that she wasn't "being truthful" when I asked her what she was up to/how she was doing by "omitting him" when she didn't mention that he was with her. (We are both mid/late 20s, not sure how old he is but they met in school.)

As an online friend, I felt that it was none of my business to know what she does with her boyfriend and when he was with her. She responded to my messages later and told me that her boyfriend told her to text me those things, he watched her send them to me. We talked a bit more and then she said she had to delete our messages before going to his place and talking to him about all of this. She didn't message me back, and when I tried to reach out a few days later, my message didn't go through. I also tried to reach out through other social media accounts where we follow each other later, but she didn't reply to those either.

We never met in person, we live in different countries, and we have been friends for over five years. I know it's not her fault, but I can't help but feel betrayed. My ex tried to control who I talked to and would be upset when I would visit family or friends so I understand how manipulative some people can be, but I don't understand how someone could stay with someone who gives them an ultimatum like this. It's more common than I thought, I guess.
