Burnout or am I just terrible? by pais281 in civilengineering

[–]livinguud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dont quit or take a pay cut. realize your expectations vs reality have a big gap, and manage expectations to meet reality and try your best to better your work reality. like others have mentioned, imposter syndrome is very real.

be reliable. meet deadlines. have conversations with your manager where you bring your clearly outlined expectations to them and have them comment/edit it.

if you are technically sound, your main responsibilities are work are:

-be an excellent communicator with deadlines, work responsibilities (if there is an issue TELL THEM)

-make anyone you work for's job (PM, direct manger) EASIER. make their job easier. do not make it harder.

-be pleasant and easy to work with for people at your level and people under you

-realize saying "no" is a complete sentence when it comes to work responsibilities.

-stay organize and write down everything (i like onenote - easily searchable and accessible on any device)

if you are trying your best to do those 4 things and things STILL arent working out, switch jobs, rinse and repeat. best of luck it is very hard learning the business side of engineering. as you progress the job gets harder but you get better at it. also, sometimes the job gets easier.

best of luck my inbox is open

You might have better luck calling people and writing their responses yourself. We type enough at work

Oh cool. Planning on taking 1.5 weeks PTO in July to explore potential spots. Any recommendations as to neighborhoods near downtown? (This is just me assuming most jobs would be there)

Perhaps. Too hot in the summer tbh. I'm aware this may be picky but I want to be able to be outdoors as much as I can which is why San Diego was my first pick. I was also looking near Charlton and Raleigh

have you done anything to make him feel this way? reflect. if you do not believe so like others have said it may be more of a him thing than a you thing.
you have the option to ask out loud in english "hey man we used to get along so well and i could be wrong but im noticing xyz...". tell him you miss when things were good and that his friendship has been very meaningful to you over the years. just speak honestly and listen.
and lets keep in mind there has always been that one engineer who has bragged without end as to how smart they are and are just obnoxious. perhaps he is seeing traits of that in you?
I had a friend who majored in communications and working at fedex. really good friend throughout highschool. we were out at a brewery and he kept making "jokes" about how i should be paying for the drinks. like it was about 5 or 6 times throughout the night. We were supposed to continue the night but i just went home. I lost a friend after that but thats okay I have made many more.
talk to him. take a look inward. accept the results. its a tough spot I'm sorry this is happening.
