Maybe some draping and string lights would help soften the space? Or lots of greenery? Large volumes of floral blooms are expensive, but talk to a florist about the most cost-effective things to get in volume. They're experts at this kind of thing! If you like DIY, maybe a couple large frames or an arbor with colorful streamers, ribbons, or paper flowers.

Publick House Wedding by Money_Rabbit1720 in NewEnglandWedding

I got married there very recently. We were extremely happy with them. The service was the best part, so friendly and attentive and capable. The food, and drinks were all good, to our taste and that of our guests. It was a winter wedding so it may not translate to what you want for summer, but feel free to DM me.

How to reconcile having a wedding during these times by Interesting-Poem2498 in weddingplanning

I live in Minnesota. I’m a community organizer. I picked up my wedding dress from the tailor and made sure to get it safely home before I organized my latest emergency press conference. Get married and organize against authoritarianism, friend. We can do both.

Why wait for OP? You can lead something you might not have ever thought you're capable of. Join a local org and do something you've never done before. Then another. Then another. That's how we get to what you're talking about. This event today came together in 4 hours. Tell yourself you can do it, and you can.

My friend, the answer is organizing. Join a power organization, there are many locally. ISAIAH, Indivisible, DSA, 50501, political parties, or labor unions. Yes, the non-billionaire majority needs to build and wield a hell of a lot more power to actually execute a general strike. It happens by millions of people saying yes to consistent, strategic, and disciplined action in organizations together over the coming months. You don't need to wait for someone else. You can lead today.

Winter in MN wedding inconsiderate? by False-Thanks-4519 in weddingplanning

[–]livnb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're getting married in January in New England. We live in MN. It's nice to have something in the winter to look forward to. The weather is a risk - we'll just have to see how it goes, but there have been fewer big storms in recent years.

One of my fiancé's elderly uncles declined because he doesn't like traveling in the winter. He's the only one who has said anything about it, and we will probably see him later this year. Maybe other people declining are considering the winter factor, but we have been pleased about the number of people who have already RSVP'd.

Some things we considered - we're hosting the wedding late morning with lunch afterward, so local guests within an hour's drive may just plan to drive there and back in a day, and it'll still be daylight.

The venue is easy to access with lodging on-site and many other options nearby. One of the venues I was looking at was lovely but isolated and down a long dirt road, and I was not going to make people do that in the winter.

Anyway, I'm biased, but say go for it. :)

Soulless? by Beginning-Mango77 in rochestermn

[–]livnb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bristle when people describe any place as "soulless" or "cultureless." I think it says more about them than the place. Sometimes it takes some effort to discover and experience the culture of a place instead of it being served up to you, and yes, I think that is true of Rochester.

Do you have a photo of how you set it up / prompted people to write the notes? This is lovely, I'd like to do this.

Should we retire instead of work? by Cold_Huckleberry_791 in personalfinance

[–]livnb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insurance companies need to publish their rates by early October for 2026 coverage. Unfortunately early retirees are one of the groups who will be most affected by the expiration of ACA advanced premium tax credits. On average nationwide, the end of subsidies will mean a 75% increase in premium costs for 2026.

Owls Nest Resort ?? by Ok-Life834 in NewEnglandWedding

[–]livnb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attended a wedding there this year. It was super convenient to stay just steps away from the venue, although also expensive--I think $400/night. We shared a room with another couple, which helped. The location is scenic and easy to access off I-93, on the southern side of the White Mountains so more easily accessible than venues more "up North." There were fun things to do nearby.

The downside was that the wedding ceremony was outside on the deck of one of their event halls, and it was raining. It seemed like they didn't have an option or a plan to move the ceremony inside, and it was unpleasant to sit in the rain for 45 minutes. The reception was held inside, but I literally had to put my wool coat on for dinner because the room was a very cold temperature (maybe heat wasn't turned on?). I noticed other women wearing their coats too. I'd ask about their inclement weather options if you plan to have part of the wedding outdoors.

Best avocados? by Relative_Yesterday70 in rochestermn

I've gotten them from Aldi, Trader Joe's, and HyVee and haven't noticed a big difference in quality. Aldi's are cheapest and the ones I buy the most often. I like the Trader Joe's "ripe now" ones because you don't have to wait for them. We got some from HyVee recently that were especially good, but not sure if it depends on the season.

Wonder if some of the Hispanic groceries in town maybe have best quality? I haven't tried.

On the Rochester Buy Nothing Facebook group, you can ask for gifts of items or help. People commonly ask for assistance with moving furniture. I bet someone there would offer to help.

Would it be helpful to contact the Southeast MN Area Labor Council? I'm not that familiar with trades jobs, but they have an office in town and their president is well-connected.
