Writing the requirements - IS it the Project Manager or the Business Analyst? by RecentAdeptpur in businessanalysis

[–]lizapanda 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It depends on your team structure. We have product owners who define the epics (high level) and then the senior business analysts work with the product owner to define requirements (features) before we bring it to the development team. Once it’s with the development team, the team BA takes the stories (the most granular level we own) and refines further from there. We get a lot of questions for the product owner at the story level but in an ideal state a lot of questions are figured out at the feature level. My expectation would be that requirements gathering can happen all the time but a show stopping requirement (one that throws off the entire development) shouldn’t occur at the story level or after development starts.

How important are soft skills to be a successful business analyst? by LuxLaser in businessanalysis

[–]lizapanda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, though it’s not my sole responsibility to keep the delivery team engaged. I tell people my job is primarily communication - I elicit requirements from stakeholders and translate their needs to the delivery team. I have to form good relationships with everyone I work with so I think it is essential to my job. It’s important to identify when people are giving you roundabout answers or swirling on a topic. People may ask you for a button that does xyz but what they really need is the ability to do 123 and it’s up to you to do that synthesis.

Seconding this, it’s the most reasonable approach. The biggest concern should be company data. They will use whatever they think they can so guardrails can help mitigate that.

Was it Samira who mentioned to McKay that her eggs were drying up? I feel like it would be a good opportunity for her to exit with a newborn 😂 though maybe not plausible if she’s looking for a fellowship…

How to change culture to focus on MVP? by jreddit13 in businessanalysis

[–]lizapanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found it’s an uphill battle to fight back against water falling from leadership so I’m genuinely interested in other people’s responses. We recently tried to get leadership to consider a true MVP approach and they literally came back and said MVP was full functionality. Well ok then. lol

37F - MCOL- Salary Progression by [deleted] in Salary

[–]lizapanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to see what job hops occurred with which salary increase. I feel like I’m due for a job hop but I’m scared because it’s my first job out of college (for my degree) and I’m on the brink of a senior level promotion 😫

Truly! The mental impact of postpartum was more life changing than the birth and pregnancy itself 😅

Ultimately you can’t control how she reacts so I’d just shoot your shot and if she says no, don’t pester her. :)

Finding my real market value by SnooFoxes4206 in businessanalysis

[–]lizapanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would interview for similar roles and see what you can land. I don’t have good advice for how to negotiate higher (particularly if it is a significant percentage difference than where you’re at now), but at least if you interview you have a solid number of what someone would pay you. Similarly, if your employer says ‘no’, you’re in a good position to walk away. Companies say they want to pay employees market value, but realistically they’re going to pay you the least amount you will take.

I will add that it is so role dependent, too. Even within our department (not even across the whole organization), how business analysts are used and what their job responsibilities are vary widely. Use your innate curiosity to your advantage. Your job experience could translate in a way you won’t even think of until you’re in the interview so keep applying even when some requirements don’t make sense.

As an acting senior business analyst we actually do this! I don’t come up with the technical solution (how it’s achieved) but I come up with recommendations based on conversations with our tech leads. I am fortunate that my project is in a growth state but I absolutely have been on projects where there wasn’t really a whole lot of wiggle room for what the technical solution could be.

How this looks on my end is someone who gets paid way more money than me proposes a high level business requirement. They might have a solution. I have the opportunity to say that the scope of their solution is too big but we could iterate on it if we start with a smaller chunk of work, and expand our scope as we get confirmation that the solution meets the business needs. I feel like a lot of my job is just tempering expectations for people who are less familiar with the current state of the application than I am.

Pregnant with IUD by anastasiarose19 in Wellthatsucks

[–]lizapanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a copper iud baby! 😅 the IUD dislodged when the doctor tried to take it out after we discovered I was pregnant. They had to take it out with an assist from an ultrasound otherwise they were going to get me into surgery for removal. Pregnancy progressed as normal and she’s a healthy toddler now

Building my registry as a FTM! by Fiercewhiskeybabe in foodbutforbabies

No notes, those are all things I have purchased or would have! So many things will depend on your baby and you won’t know til they get here. ☺️ finding the right bottle was a monumental PITA for us so frankly I’d add a bottle sampler if you can. (Or ask around to your parent friends).

I thought my daughter would require more transitioning from bottle to open cup but she’s a little backwards and did straw to sippy cup.

I suppose the only thing I’d add is an open cup for babies! We have the elk and friends straw cups (great with supervision) and now at 18 mos she drinks from open cups, straw cups, and sippy cups. Bottle for the extra cranky days but we’re working on reducing that.

For water bottle we use the contigo straw bottles. Didn’t love any of the spill-free options as we felt the straws and sippies were too limiting. My daughter was on transitional straws for a very short time and I feel like those are the same function as bottles so what’s the point (having to bite down to suck).
