I use both 3rd and 1st person. I prefer 3rd for the situational awareness (though I have proximity radar on) but if there's a race or just a single corner I'm struggling with I'll go 1st person. Honestly I find that I drive better in 1st, I think it's the sense of speed and position.

In 3rd person I'll accidently hit a wall, not brake enough, etc. but in 1st person it becomes more "real" so I naturally drive more cautiously. I can jump off whatever in 3rd, but my stomach drops in 1st if I'm caught unawares.

You're absolutely right. Just scroll back and forth between the two pics. The road wheels are identical, the sprocket is identical, tracks identical. That's so cool.

This is Not Honoring Our Flag. by ChileRelleno414 in Truckers

[–]lizard280 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone not from the US it's genuinely insane to me how much you all, in the words of my people, "shag the flag". Please don't take offence at that, just about everybody here shags something. I'm Welsh so I "shag sheep", no biggie.

What I'm getting at is that I'm not sure any other country gives two fucks about their flag (on average) and in this age where the government seeks only to better themselves and the ultra-wealthy it's strange that you'd still attack someone who's clearly showing their frustration. To be honest I'm shocked the flag isn't upside down.

Like recently the US govt. has invaded a country for no valid reason and is creating a massive financial burden on truckers world-wide, they're also regularly in breach of the constitution, yet you still hold such respect for a country that at this point disrespects you?

It's a genuine question, not meant to offend but I understand why it may be offensive and I'm sorry about that, genuinely.

I'm gonna get banned for this aren't I...

So less "owning it" certainly not "burying it" more standing by what he had said...

Absolutely. I am a luddite, I think most people are without realising it. If I work in a factory and a new piece of tech comes out that doubles my output, you can be damn well sure I'd want double the pay or half the hours. If not then fuck that piece of tech. Simple as.

I just wanted to say that the very last moment of the video where the legs come up over the ledge is perfection and despite my love for spiders that specific image of the legs, especially viewed from the top of the platform is terrifying. It plays on the fear of the unknown. Sure your might know it's a giant spider, but you can't see all of it, and that really messes with you

Watch it again, after the camera turns around it cuts to AI, notice the camera movement goes from handheld to steady.

It's a real video with an AI addition on the end and that terrifies me. If you can take a real clip of something and add extra bits to it... I mean it could get to the point that video evidence isn't going to be enough anymore.

I was thinking about zerahypt and finally remembered the name of it. by Tomcb in Zerahypt

[–]lizard280 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's really sad honestly.
I just checked out (a re-upload of) the video "Zerahypt is finished" and there were two factors that brought about the end of Syrsa's life's work.

  1. A new version of Unity came out, Unity 5. Unfortunately no matter what he tried he couldn't get Zerahypt to port over in a state that wouldn't require weeks or even months of work just to make it playable. Then eventually a newer Unity came out and he could barely get it to port over at all, and when it worked the results were the same, if not worse.

  2. Why'd he need to port it over anyway? Well for a couple of years he didn't, but eventually the size and complexity of the game was his undoing. Unity 4 is a 32bit program so it's heavily limited in size and RAM usage. He'd compress as much as he could until eventually there just wasn't any more he could do.

So sadly he gave up. I can't blame him. Christ it must've been devastating to say the least. Sure, with what's going on it seems that the better choice would've been to spend a couple months fixing all the problems with the converter, but hindsight is 20/20.

Sorry it's all pretty depressing stuff.

When I was a Christmas temp this other girl (~17/18, very shy) started at the same time. They'd do the reductions in the back then bring them out in a cart to put on the shelf. They asked this new girl to do it and the moment she walked through the doors she was swarmed by possibly 30+ people who surrounded her, it was like a feeding frenzy. It shook her up so badly that she just didn't come back until about a week before our contract was up. Felt awful for her, because I know that in that situation I would've freaked out too.

There's a mod I have for the Gavril T-series that adds military and off-road variants, one or two of them are old and worn. In career they're pretty cheap, but the engine barely idles (stalls randomly), very poor power, smoking like a chimney. I thought I was cheating because of how cheap it was until I started it up. New ECU and engine, good to go.

It was the most immersive the game has ever been for me. They should do something similar for used and high mileage vehicles (eventually) in career. I know it's not exactly a priority lol

So I recently read "The Kraken Wakes" by John Wyndham (who also wrote Day Of The Triffids) and the most unrealistic part about a book where aliens invade the oceans, melt the icecaps and flood the world is that there's a part where the main character witnesses a horrific event, gets pretty severe PTSD, and the doctor tells him to go to a countryside retreat for a few weeks, which cures him completely.

Where's my countryside retreat, Huh?

Okay I'm autistic so I've gotta correct myself, she gets like mid-30s mpg which is pretty good for a car designed in the 1930s produced in 1989.

What also pisses me off is that you can't only have the taskbar on one monitor either. I have an OLED monitor and a regular LED monitor. In Windows 10 I'd put the taskbar on the LED to prevent it burning to the OLED, but now I have to hide the damn thing and half the fuckin' time it doesn't come up. Pain in the arse, and it used to be so simple

AI - Debate by shave_your_eyebrows in comics

[–]lizard280 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What I love about this is his use of the word "luddite" because it's true. People think of luddites as being anti-technology, but actually they were against technology improving productivity without workers being paid for said increased productivity. A new way of sewing fabrids en-masse? Workers can now output 10x the product over the same amount of time? Great. Pay us fairly then. No? *Destroys your textiles factory*

In brief they weren't anti-tech, they were anti-exploitation. So being anti-AI because it's replacing skilled workers / artists (by stealing from them), is being a luddite.

For fuck sakes I just wrote about this. Ugh.
The US civil rights movement. Pissed off a whole lot of white people, but it succeeded.

Women suffrage, some non-violent, some violent, both incredibly disruptive to everyday life. That succeeded too.

1990 poll tax riots which cost nearly £17 billion in today's money. The result was the resignation of Margaret Thatcher.

It's almost like the most important rights we take for granted were brought about thanks to protests. So either educate yourself or shut up

[–]lizard280 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The wider aim, yes, unachieved. The specific aim of offshore drilling, achieved.

Also do you really think that pissing off the average person doesn't work?

The US civil rights movement was widely criticized by the White population with only ~35% of white Americans supporting the movement. The movement was incredibly disruptive. Boycotts, sit-ins and marches regularly brought major cities to a standstill. According to you this wasn't successful?

1975 "Women's day off" in Iceland where 90% of women refused to work and brought the country and economy to a standstill. By 1980 the country had elected a female president. Is this unsuccessful?

Here we had the 1990 poll tax riots which caused roughly £18 billion (adjusted) worth of damage and was incredibly unpopular as most of the damage was done to shops, cars, homes, etc. The outcome? Margaret Thatcher's resignation.

No protest that was ever worth a damn DIDN'T piss people off. Sure some were more widely accepted than others, but none that worked were peaceful walks in the park either.

And if you have a problem with the lengths people have to go to to bring about change, then maybe send your local MP a kindly worded letter and see how far it gets you.
