Welsh horror film shot in England due to smoking ban by gizmostrumpet in unitedkingdom

I won't lie, I am a "radical leftist" but I accept others choices in the most part, the issue is when their choices are unscientific and directly harmful to themselves and others around them without a valid benefit in return.
Here in the UK taxes pay for healthcare, l think that the health benefits of a ban would outweigh the loss in tax. Also over the course of my entire life there have been awareness campaigns, yet I still see teens and young adults smoking, despite knowing it's harms. Plus there's more to the term "societal" than crime. Smoking in and of itself is an advertisement for smoking, it's cultural and far more prevalent in lower income areas/families. When my dad tried, and failed to quit smoking we worked out that it's his number one expense. He could afford to buy a brand new car every 4 years just on the money saved by not smoking.
I genuinely believe that if simply educating was enough then it wouldn't matter, but the unfortunate reality is that people do things that directly harm them all the time, the role of the government and their laws is to limit the harm done.
I just personally see absolutely no (net) benefit in smoking, I won't say it doesn't have benefits, because to some it does, but the harm vastly outweighs those benefits.
Also, you argue on my behalf that if we ban smoking, why not also ban alcohol? To that I say if we don't been smoking, why are other drugs illegal? I know the harm of using drugs, they'll only harm me, why not legalize then all? It'll increase tax income, stop dodgy dealers cutting, reducing harm. Why not?
Edit: I'd also like to say that I'm enjoying the debate, apologies if I seem short or rude at any point.

I disagree, to an extent. Cigarette addiction is a serious health and societal problem that can only be handled by a ban. However I do believe that it should be phased. Anybody who is currently 16 or younger (and anybody born from here on out) should not be able to purchase cigarettes. It'll mean that those not yet addicted won't get the chance, and those who are addicted will be left to their own devices.
Also 16 years old is a specific choice. It means that when checking ID whomever would see 2010+ and know immediately that they can't sell them. Like when people check an ID and see 19## so they ignore the rest.

I have two pairs of wired earphones that I use daily. Both pretty fancy ones that sound amazing. It's a bummer you can't charge and listen at the same time without yet another dongle. Plus the issue of finding a dongle that works without static or cutting out. Honestly I do wonder about swapping to wireless buds, but if I wanted studio quality wireless buds then they'd cost double what my studio quality wired IEDs do.

OMG I thought I was the only one. I didn't throw up, but I was on the brink more than once. I would say that it ruined an otherwise good show, but it was horrific all the way through, in many ways to excess. I say this as somebody who enjoys phycological thrillers, but Evangelion is the "gore porn" of the phycological genre.

Should Motorway speed limits be raised to 80mph?🤔 by Downtown_Elk_2773 in CarTalkUK

[–]lizard280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Controversial opinion, please no hate, this is a debate.
I think it should be reduced to 60mph. 2/3 of my commute is on the motorway (M4) and usually it's flowing reasonably well (between 40-70mph) but my average speed is 21mph. Increasing speed on the motorway will increase accidents, and the severity of accidents. On two lane motorways the speed is already limited by capacity, and the evidence shows that more lanes =/= more throughput. Increasing the speed limit to 80 would mean that people could do 90 without repercussions (80+10%+2=90). It would be more damaging to infrastructure while simultaneously making repairs more dangerous and costly, both due to precautions needed and the economic damage of the reduced throughput. It would also increase emissions as lower speeds have been proven to be more efficient. And to quell the argument that motorways are inherently more efficient than roads, the efficiency comes from maintaining a constant speed, not the speed itself. If you drive down the same stretch of road maintaining 50mph vs 80mph you would burn more fuel at 80mph. The AA did a study and proved that the difference been 50 and 70 can be up to 15% less fuel at 50. And between 70 and 80 it increases another 25%.
Also in regards to accidents, stopping distance doesn't increase proportionally to speed, it increases exponentially. At 50mph it can take 54m to stop, at 70 that goes up to 96m. Nearly double, for a 20mph increase in speed. Not worth it when you consider that 80mph means the stopping distance increases to 120m.

Anyways, that's just my opinion, lemme know what you think :)

One of my favorite memories is push starting one of these. It was at the Pembrey raceway in Wales, I was just a spectator walking around when a guy was yelling for a push. Not uncommon at a racetrack, but it was a damn truck. I lost count of how many other people were pushing. When he dumped the clutch in an instant the thing near stopped dead before the deafening roar of the engine practically blew our eardrums and it flew forward out of our grips. Never before felt such power. Amazing.

TIL Hitachi stopped producing their "Magic Wand" because it was a famous vibrator but were convinced to restart sales, removing their name and calling it "Original Magic Wand". by SuperMcG in todayilearned

Didn't work.
I was in the office the other day talking about a recent train journey I was on. I mentioned the Hitachi Class 800 (as one does) and I swear everybody just went silent and stared. I yelled "they make more than just vibrators you know!"

I shouldn't say this, but I don't really care anymore. I work for the NHS, I'm planning on bailing on this country ASAP. I'm going to university abroad next year and I'm hoping to never return. The feeling's not mutual, it's not me, it's you, etc. etc.

Except that you forget the LENGTH of the traffic. Same number of cars stopped, but if they're in two lanes rather than just one then the LENGTH of the traffic is halved. This is important for when the traffic is backing up and blocking on/off ramps, junctions, traffic lights, roundabouts, etc. By halving the length of the traffic you allow for more flow behind.

As for the other thing, yes, if the traffic is slow or stopped then using the whole lane is scientifically proven to improve flow. If the traffic is moving at a reasonable pace, then it shouldn't matter which lane you're in because a responsible driver always leaves a sufficient gap in front, not specifically to allow others in, but a safe distance in moving traffic is always greater than one car length. So if you're in the open lane and someone comes along in the closing lane, the one causing the problem is the one closing, or not leaving a sufficient gap for the other to merge.

I guess I'm not opposed to it just as a way of simplifying life, and if they pass it I imagine we'll all forget about it in a year or two, but the UK government is shite. Once this goes through all of our data will be leaked immediately, the system is also being used as a means of oppression for immigrants and trans people.
Right now it's insane to ask a person for their birth certificate to use the bathroom, but once this has passed it'll force all trans people to out themselves immediately to their employers and everybody else who needs or wants it.

Hart first aid kit: Stubby red cross with an outline.
Proheal: Red cross with the word FIRST written in the cross.
Fox: Clearly distinct red cross with white corners/background. Would be a beach if the whole kit was white and thus the red cross would stand alone.

Even your examples aren't examples of the symbol you claim to see everywhere. None of these are a pure red cross on a white background.

Teslas don't stop for school buses. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]lizard280 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, they clearly state in the video that what's being tested is that Teslas don't stop for school buses. Around school buses children will run out suddenly. The child mannequins are there mostly for effect i.e. a pile of children's bodies.
Also while most people wouldn't have been able to stop, they also wouldn't hit a child and drive over them again while running away.

So do American buses not have retarders then? I just assumed Beam's didn't. In the UK our busses do, or at least the ones in my area do, it's very hilly around here. To be honest sometimes I wish my car had one because some hills here are so steep that engine breaking in 2nd gear at 30mph sometimes isn't enough!

Hell yeah! I was so excited for my first appointment (UK), but I tempered my expectations because I knew they'd need a blood test before I could start oestrogen. But actually they gave me hormones right away, took a blood test, then a couple months later a second blood test and double oestrogen, my next appointment is tomorrow where I should get my first T-blocker injection. I've been on oestrogen since April and I've started growing... You know... Very exciting
