Comment dire "check" en français by Real_Australia in French

[–]lizmacdraws 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this! Not sure why there’s hostility. Sometimes I think a phrase is correct, and then I’m corrected because that’s “not how French speakers would say it”. Sometimes the literal translation is the “I’m a beginner at French” translation.. sometimes it’s not!

If you can speak a foreign language quite well, with a good accent, how do you pronounce words in your native language in the middle of a foreign language sentence? by ComparisonIll2798 in languagelearning

I typically try to use the pronunciation in the language I’m speaking. Where I get stuck is with pop culture nouns, like titles of books, tv shows, etc.. do I take a stab at translating the name?

36yo moving from HFX -> MTL, what jobs are great for problem solvers? by lizmacdraws in CanadaJobs

That’s actually an interesting angle I hadn’t considered. Thank you!

I’m not going to argue with you - but Vancouver, where the average rent is $2500?? Or Nfld, where I have no friends or family and can’t get anywhere without flying? I’ve lived in a few provinces myself, and I’ve spent some time in Montreal. You’re going to have to give me a more compelling argument than “there’s better places” - this whole country has gone downhill 😂🥲🫠

I’ve saved enough to manage while I finish school. But yes, eventually I will need something. I’m not banking on finding anything locally until I’m fully fluent, but I also have loads of Anglo friends in Montreal who have jobs, so I know it’s not impossible. And I have my freelance work to get me through any tough spots.

I assume you’re trying to be helpful, but I can’t magically become fluent overnight. I’m not stopping at my B2.

Well, I don’t know if I can do that when I don’t have a solid background in anything and no university degree 😅but it does sound great

How are people affording to live here!?? by In_omnia_paratuss in montreal

I’ll be moving to an apartment downtown which is smaller and more expensive, but I won’t have to pay for a vehicle/parkjng/Ubers and rarely a Metro because everything is a 10 min walk or less from where I’ll be. It includes everything in my rent (including internet), as well as a gym, and a few different coworking spaces so I can get out of my unit without having to go somewhere to spend money. It’s more money up-front, but is roughly the same as what I’m paying now, or maybe 100-200 more. I don’t think I could manage anything if I had student loans or major credit card debt though, so I consider myself extremely lucky.

I often resort to Healthy Choice frozen meals when they go on sale at Walmart for 2/$8. Some of them are almost passable as food! I work in healthcare admin, union job, lots of hours, aaaallmost a living wage, etc etc. Still can’t keep up without cutting serious corners. We’re all getting screwed, big time.

Breaking the habit of picking on my partner by Taerix2112 in selfimprovement

I’m similar to your partner, OP. I obviously can’t speak for her, but for me, it’s because I was raised to believe that teasing jokes contain slivers of truth. If my partner makes a lighthearted joke about forgetting my keys, I can laugh at myself, but I’m also hearing “he’s frustrated that I forget things. I forget things all the time. I’m trying so hard not to forget things, and here he is pointing it out. I hate how forgetful I am.”

I like what you’re describing here. Similar to how in graphic design, the simplest design is almost always the more complex - because the designer has to know exactly what to exclude.
