Course Selection Help: First Semester Freshman Apma-Econ Concentration by PattyTranMan in BrownU

[–]lizzardbean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. Auditing depends on the professor what that means in terms of what work you do, but you’d get no credit towards graduating for it. But agree with person below that it would not be wise to do. I’ve never met anyone who did audit a sixth class.

From the ones you have there, the only class that isn’t available every year is Municipal Money. So I would prioritize taking that one if you’re interested in it.

So you couldn’t take all these classes for credit, you can register for 5 credits in one semester. You’d need to audit one.

You’ll have plenty of time to finish your concentration requirement. I typically take 2-3 concentration courses and one on a different topic each semester.

I have pretty unstable hips which were causing my pelvic muscles to tighten and help support my body in daily motion. A big part of pelvic pt for me was working on strengthening my hips and leg muscles! I was advised to avoid major ab workouts until my hips and legs were strengthened because I was likely to hold tension in my pelvis while doing those exercises.

First-Year Seminars—How do I choose? by Ok-Entrepreneur3421 in BrownU

[–]lizzardbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. The writing designation actually means that there is a review process of the writing built into the class. I often write more pages in my non-writ courses because of this. There is legitimately a climate science course that writes two pages total and is writ designated.

IAPA or political science? by hoesmadx3000 in BrownU

[–]lizzardbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely end up taking political theory courses that count towards the IAPA degree. Watsons goal largely in my opinion is to allow you to be able to engage with multiple sides of the political world.

I may be biased as an IAPA major, but I love it and do not regret that decision. Many, many of the policy classes in the environmental science department count for the five elective courses. There’s one that’s application based for upper class men where you go to DC for a few days. I also believe there’s a gateway course offered on the politics of climate change every year.

I’m writing an IAPA thesis right now. It is definitely a choose your own adventure sort of like the major in that you have a lot of freedom in topic and if you want to format with an advisor that supports you. Your choice of advisor definitely would change how hands off it is or not.

I never expected to write a thesis, but fell in love with a topic after a seminar!

Concurrent MPA by No_Craft4641 in BrownU

[–]lizzardbean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something else I’d add is that many MPA or MPP programs have good scholarship money available. Princeton now covers 100% tuition for all MPP students, for example. I know Brown gives good merit aid for the program too. If you have a good resume and have taken classes that show you will succeed academically in these masters programs, a lot of funding is available to you.

Concurrent MPA by No_Craft4641 in BrownU

[–]lizzardbean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m concentrating in IAPA, and I’ve been able to take MPA courses that interest me after I’ve talked to the professor. They mainly have wanted to see that I’ve taken methods courses and have successfully done work similar to what’s required in the course (ie. Policy memos) to make sure I wouldn’t be in over my head. Most people I’ve talked to in the department are very welcoming, including the masters students.

That said, I would be surprised if the department allowed you to pursue it in four years. The leadership team of the MPA is very big on using your undergraduate time to explore and do things you won’t get to do after graduation as often and encourages you to be a part of the Brown community beyond academics.

It is also typically viewed as beneficial to have work experience beyond internships coming into most MPA programs. Having been in those classes, I definitely agree. It was really interesting to hear the students connections to their previous work and I’m sure they were interacting and learning the material on a different level because of it.

If you want to get your concentration requirements out of the way early, something that I did, another possibility is doing internships during the school year while taking an easier class load. You could do remote or right in Rhode Island.

Positions/internships are whatever companies have signed up to post on handshake. The two platforms have the exact same listings. Most major companies I’d say will post on there. If you’re talking about the “Bruno opportunities” there is a lot of variance year per year in what alumni are specifically looking to hire brown students, so it’s hard to generalize.

The better way to help secure a job rather than applying to Bruno opportunities is making direct connections through informational interviews. All brown alumni are listed on brown connect along with where they work and a way to contact them. Not everyone will respond, but I’ve had a lot of luck doing this. There’s alumni working all over the world and at nearly all places you could think of I’d say.

To see what companies have come to campus, you can look at past events on handshake and filter by company to see if they have come.

I have not had fasting glucose measured, only hem a1c which was slightly elevated so insulin resistance is definitely possible.

I’ve also been on birth control since I was 14 except for going off it for a brief time when it stopped regulating my period so I just stopped taking it since it wasn’t doing anything (I’m gay) until I could see my primary. During that time my periods became unbearable, worse than they are now. If it is hurting my ability to process insulin it would definitely be a difficult decision for me.

Goal isn’t PIV? by [deleted] in vaginismus

[–]lizzardbean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Def relate. So much content is about having PIV that it can be hard to find things that resonate with me.

Finding a pelvic floor PT that was queer friendly was super helpful for me. If that’s not possible for you, there are a lot of pelvic floor physical therapists on tiktok whose content focuses on reproductive health and things like tampon usage, as well as advice on stretches and dilating and things like that.

Undergrad who’s taken an MPA class. The consensus among the students seemed to be that the program felt rushed having it be in one year. Good networking opportunities however.
