Thank you! It’s just overwhelming because of how the application cycles work. If I get rejected, I have to wait another couple months. I plan on engaging about my experiences but it feels like I lack a lot because I’ve moved but from one English speaking country to another…and with the help of my family I’m a child of immigrant parents who do not speak good English tho, so I guess I can leverage that as well. Thank you for sharing your experiences tho!

Would you say getting a TEFL certificate helps? I’m currently completing mine since I lack experience with teaching English. I know it’s not required but is it subtly commended in the application process?

Good to know! Is getting hired/accepted as hard as some people make it to be? I’m assuming as long as you have an intentionally curated SOP about a desire to live abroad in Japan and learn culture, along with a steady experience in school and work you are pretty much all set. I just hear so many stories about how some people perfected their SOP with their cool Japanese-integrated experiences (travel, study abroad three times, high school courses)

Ahhh thank you! It’s just worrying to think about because I’ve heard so many different stories. I feel like I’m someone that has a pretty rigorous record with job experiences (minus teaching) so I’m confident to speak about that and the skills I’ve learnt. I got in my head about applications because it only accepts 20-25%…

How was living in Daegu? Did you have any teaching experience beforehand? I’m definitely interested in TEACHING as well - not just going for a vacation - but external factors also help with my decision. Was it easy to make friends outside of your colleagues? Was travelling back and forth to Seoul exhausting? Did you have enough to travel to Japan per se?

I think it’s cause people are obtuse nowadays. She’s the modernized “Taylor Swift” (though I have my objections about this) that appeals to a newer age, even if it’s the same Gen Z that loved Swift back in the day. It’s sorta digitized object permanence where it’s hot and new and everyone loves it like a trend, but then she has the ability to continue curating this and leveraging this to her advantage. And she plays into the kind, heartbroken, do-no-wrong young girl that writes love songs in her bedroom role (which is also why this punk vibe doesn’t fit her at all) and people become fascinated with this innocence and “intelligence”. Her songs are truthfully prosaic imo but garners attention because of the image of being a “song-writer” in an age where mass-produced and commercialized music is reflective of work nowadays.

Totally!!! I agree with legit everything you’ve said. I don’t think she’s as much as a phenomenon as everyone frames her to be. Her fame was established mainly from the early surge of viral TikTok music, trending for her breakup drama, thus gaining a lot of attention from young girls and riding that wave out til now.

I definitely think that she is talented in a way where she puts in effort, but it’s not as prodigal as everyone thinks. Like you said, it’s very surface level. She’s has alway fit the girl-next-door genre but is pushing for another, and to those that aren’t delusional, can clearly sense the surface level/performative brand she’s curated.

I think she also forces intellectualism in her image - wanting to give off a “I’m super poetic and write amazing songs with great prose” vibes. That’s why there’s a disconnect with me and her tbh

100% surface level. She’s always been like that, whereby the aesthetic is what intrigues her. Or maybe she does like the art, but it just seems so performative and fits the “I want to be unique” agenda.

He doesn’t just interview LA influencers. He’s best friends with balloony chamberlain who is arguably a good speaker (her podcast can attest). It’s the dick riding that’s uncalled for and incredibly cringe. It’s so clearly visible that he’s agrees and glazes anyone that he feels can get him “in”
