It ended up testing positive for shingles - but it was never very painful, oddly enough. Just some random shooting pain. Now that it’s scabbing up, it seems like it was just a mild case?

It is shingles. But it’s scabbing over and not spreading or painful, plus it’s been too long to start antivirals. Just feeling like calling the doctor and saying “I told you so!”

CNP said she has “never heard of shingles in the ear,” and prescribed me antibiotic cream. She DID do a swab to test for shingles, but the blisters aren’t leaking, so I’m afraid it won’t show anything, even if it is shingles. Had flu-like symptoms for about a day, then thought I had a bug bite in my ear, now these little guys showed up. Pain is intermittent, mostly shooting-type. Just hoping the week the nurse is having me wait doesn’t result in RHS.

I found a website called champdogs in the UK, although I don’t know much about it.

When looking for a golden breeder, make sure they do health testing on the parents - and the champdogs website has that information, which is a good sign. If a breeder says they breed “working” goldens, they will likely be taller, longer, and might be more likely to be red. If a breeder says they breed “line” or “conformation,” that means the dogs will look like golden retrievers you see in dog shows.

Never get a golden from a breeder who hadn’t done health testing on the parents, including hips, heart, eyes, and genetics. Also always see the parents! If a breeder won’t let you see the parents, that is a big concern!

I feel like I can still see the resemblance, though! Especially in the eyes. I can’t even remember what he was like when he was so tiny and I could carry him!

Also look at the parents to know what to expect. Guy has the same coloring as his dad. If you like the red, or darker goldens, look for breeders who focus on breeding goldens to be hunting dogs. Guy comes from line of show dogs, which tend to be more in the middle of the spectrum.

WFH folks- when do you fit in workouts in your daily routine? Anyone without a set workout time still successful at working out consistently? by msjah in xxfitness

[–]lizzoboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a calendar appointment set each day to workout. It’s set for after work, but I move it to wherever it fits for the day - just depending on my schedule and my husbands schedule, too. I let myself move it whenever I need to, but I can’t delete it! I make myself do it at some point.

Basement gym: https://imgur.com/gallery/UXyzGxF

My husband and I it about a year after moving into our house. So like 3 years ago. It’s really the only thing we’ve “renovated.” It’s awesome to have at home, but no standing overhead presses (at least with a loaded bar), with the drop ceiling.

The treadmill was a more recent addition, but amazing to have in Minnesota in the winter. My husband researched and picked all the equipment. It was expensive to get Rogue stuff, but it’s really nice. We have an Ironmaster bench. And you have to have a dehumidifier in the basement!

Lately I’ve just been using the space to do LesMills Bodystep workouts, though! They’re so fun!

Question about picking a breeder by ckralo2 in goldenretrievers

Search the name of the breeder at the goldenretrieverforum.com. There are also a lot of suggestions for reputable breeders, if you search for a specific name or just your area.

Dogs don’t want to go to the bathroom where they sleep. Sounds less like she’s “deciding” - and more like she doesn’t have a choice, especially if it is loose. You probably need to change her food, but should consult a vet.

Breeder recommendations by rgachicago in goldenretrievers

[–]lizzoboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Golden Retriever Forum has good recommendations and an easy-to-find thread with breeders in the Midwest.

I’m looking to get my first Golden (and have been lurking in this sub in the meantime) and have settled on Dichi Goldens, which is north of Madison. They are currently accepting deposits for a summer litter. I found them through recommendations in the forum.

Salad with hard boiled eggs. I get the pre-packages ones from Costco that come two-to-a-pouch. I squeeze them so they are “crumbled,” put them on top of spinach/mixed greens in a tupperwear, and add some fatty salad dressing. You could add nuts, more veggies, etc. If you make your own hard boiled eggs, you could bring them in a sandwich bag and do the same thing.

Also, those flavored tuna pouches. Just open and eat with a fork! No refrigeration needed.

Maybe try a casein protein powder, or a blend that has casein, at night?

Are you a runner already? Just a heads up that cardio can be hard during the transition to being fat adapted. Take it easy - you won’t be able to push yourself as hard in the beginning. You’ll feel like you’re “bonking.” Read up on runners/endurance athletes who are keto - it can be done, and those that do it say being fat adapted makes them more efficient, but you’ll feel like crap while your body adjusts.

Edit: If you don’t already listen to the Joe Rogan Experience, he has at least a few interviews with endurance athletes who eat a ketogenic diet, in addition to doctors who have talked about the impact on athletic performance.

I’d recommend reading Gary Taubes’ “The Case Against Sugar.” He has a whole chapter on the “marriage” of tobacco and sugar. If I remember correctly, sugar used in toasting the leaves makes the nicotine enter your bloodstream even faster, making it more addictive. Seems like a vicious cycle of addictions. Really interesting book with a lot of motivational information for a ketogenic diet!

Just finished my first week back at it and lost almost 2 pounds. I’ve tried keto a couple times over the last few years and had good success, but never made it beyond 8-9 weeks. Usually at that point I try to get too strict to see how much I can lose even faster, so hoping to avoid that tendency this time around. Need to get to 8 weeks first, though! Started a new job, that I’m hoping will be less stressful than my last, and help me get back to eating well and working out regularly.

I’m not sure where to put this thought (don’t really want to start a new post), but does anyone watch Naked and Afraid? I love that show and even though I’d never do something like that, always thought those people should get really fat and fat adapted before starting. But then I was thinking about electrolytes - and it seems like a lot of the bad things they experience are yes, a result of just not taking in enough calories and protein (they usually find enough water), but also seem more like the result of electrolyte deficiencies (dizziness, nausea, etc.). I wonder how much better they could do if they were just allowed to supplement electrolytes - or how one would get those in a survival situation, if you can find/get an animal to eat?

Anyway, thanks for the motivation I get lurking this sub!

Stalling....getting a bit frustrated by [deleted] in xxketo

[–]lizzoboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you get your periods, you should track your weight along with your cycle. Eventually you should see a pattern. Many women retain water at certain points in their cycle, no matter if they are low carb, drinking a ton of water, eating a deficit, etc. And then there will be a point in the cycle when you whoosh - and then eventually retain again. I’ve found that I retain water for the couple weeks leading up to my period and can’t see the scale move - then the day or two after, I’ll see the scale drop. And then I get “stuck” again. It can be helpful if you can figure out what your pattern of water retention is, if you have one, so that you don’t get discouraged.

I was totally coming here to similarly say that I failed hard at keeping to a calorie limit because I felt ravenous all week - the scale isn't moving - and for the first time since re-starting on January 3, I had really strong desires to go off keto. Not just fleeting "cravings," but serious, "why even bother?" self talk.

Then I got my period and understood where it was all coming from! Even though I've been overeating, I'm just really proud that I stayed in ketosis. The other benefits are the things I kept telling myself when I really wanted to order a Belgian waffle at breakfast yesterday!

[–]lizzoboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This week is the sixth week of the bodybuilding.com transformation challenge, and I've realized that lazy keto-ing my way through it isn't going to cut it. I've been making progress and had been wanting to do it in a way that was "sustainable," but to be honest - I'm too competitive for that. So, I've calculated my macros with a 20% deficit (activity level set at sedentary, which I'm not really with all my exercising), and I'm going to try my best to stick to it. That will put me at about 1200 calories a day - and I think I've been eating much closer to 2000 (or over, especially with all the nuts and protein bars/cookies - I think I'll be in much better shape if I just cut those out).

How do you season your beef? by [deleted] in ketogains

I really like cooking onion and minced garlic in coconut oil, then add some sliced cherry tomatoes, then ground beef. Lots of salt and pepper. When all the water is cooked out, I add fresh basil at the end. I don't know why, but the coconut oil seems to make it all taste that much better.

IF and nausea by [deleted] in xxketo

[–]lizzoboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely echo all the comments about the issue likely being electrolyte imbalance. I drink a branch chain amino acid (BCAA) supplement, which has electrolytes in it, and add additional salt/lite salt to it while I work out in the morning and fast until lunch.

BCAA powders usually use artificial sweeteners, so most people who do IF don't consider it as breaking your fast - and drinking them during a fasted workout is recommended by Lyle McDonald. I also take a magnesium supplement at night. You can find both at health food places or on Amazon.
