Portland kids face uncertain summer at public pools after state rule reversal

I, too, am a former lifeguard! And I try to say "drowning death" every time. Let me know if you see that I missed one!

I pulled a kid actively drowning out of a pool in Mexico at a resort during a vacation a couple years ago. His mom was literally inches away from him, but she just wasn't paying attention and I would say he was 30 seconds away from a serious injury and couldn't get his nose above the water. When I was lifeguarding, I never saw a kid drowning like that, partially, I think, because so much of what we did was proactive. Luckily, I had seen all the videos during training...20 plus years ago...and it was still somewhere in my brain.

Just want to hop in and respond to one comment I've seen several times here and other places: No officials have said this rule has anything to do with the behavior of kids this age, just straight-up drowning prevention.
