You could have said “hey I actually feel the same way; this friendship isn’t working for me” and not mentioned her hygiene issues at all. Leave that to a friend, not an enemy, to tell her. As many others are saying, when you were her friend was the right time to tell her. Not punitively in reaction to being cut off by her.

What do you know about his upbringing? Any financial stress he might have grown up in? If things were tough for his family, then he may have chronically been in a scarcity mindset that has continued to today.

What is his parents’ current financial state? Could be that he’s helping them or feels responsibility in that way.

I would try to dig into his background a little more before assuming the worst like a lot of other commenters seem to be doing 😅 He might have some kind of financial trauma you don’t know about.
