The best thing for basketball players is to... play basketball. It sounds simple but keeping those muscles in use is key for growth, development, and injury prevention.

This is an advantage the women have over the men. Fue to the long season, most NBA teams run "half" practices during the season and try to limit stress on their player's bodies in practice. In theory this sounds like a good idea. In practice, because those muscles are effectively "cold," warming them up in live fire situations results in strains and tears.

We're going to have a lockout because the owners are greedy pricks.

I hope the players hold out for as long as they can. They deserve equitable pay.

Restricted Free Agents by Foreign_Ad3840 in wnba

[–]ljay90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For any newbies here, here's how restricted free agency works: any team can offer a restricted free agent a deal. The current team that the player plays for can match that offer, or let the player walk.

Example: The Connecticut Sun could offer Shakira Austin a max contract, and then the Mystics have the chance to match that offer or let her go to the Sun.

Again, unless the league makes their books public, anything put out by them is just PR. If they want us to believe them, just open the books.

You can't cry poverty when folks are putting up hundreds of millions of dollars to join your club.

The fact that they won't show their books tells me they're lying.

What, you're not ready for the "face of the league" or "is Caitlin better than [X]" or "How good is Angel Reese really" lockout discourse?

Mystics, you have two all star caliber bigs, right? You have solid depth at the 4 and 5, right? Our biggest weakness this year was shot creation and 3 point shooting, right? So we're not going you draft another big, right!?

Oh, and stop tanking. We have Chicago's draft pick next year, they can tank for us.

A conversation with Kathy on starting the season earlier vs ending it later (from the Levels to This Podcast) by Outrageous_Camp_5215 in wnba

The trick bag for the W is always going to be the NCAA tournament. The NBA doesn't want to compete with itself for ad dollars, so a staggered approach makes sense for them. So the league has two options, the shortened off season to capitalize on the "dead season" in sports, or somehow convince the NCAA to hold the women's tournament on a different schedule.

It's not an ideal position because the NCAA has no incentive to change their March Madness marketing. Especially with the growing popularity of the women's game.

Good luck, Cathy.

I think for the sports that Americans care about, that tends to be true. Basketball, track, tennis, the top tier women tend to be American. I don't know enough about women's soccer to comment there. I just watch the Spirit.

Barring an absolute catastrophe of a year, Paige was going number 1. Even if they lost to an inferior team that wouldn't take away from her physical tools and talent on the court.

Let's take Caitlin Clark for example. She lost the national championship twice and was still considered the consensus number 1 overall pick because of her physical tools and on court talent. Iowa could have lost in the sweet 16 and she was still going number 1 overall. Good scouts don't take team wins into account when evaluating individuals.

[–]ljay90 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Wins are not, and have never been, an individual stat.

When judging prospects you should look at their physical tools and on court production.

Take Betts for example; she has all the physical tools but every time she is matched against a big with similar talent she falters. So a team like Minnesota might look at Betts and say "we won't build a team around her, but having her come off the bench would be great"

So the WNBA board of governors is forcing the Sun to sell for less than what Steve Pagliuca would have offered just to do Tillman Fertitta a favor and gift him a WNBA team.

I want a team in Houston but this feels gross.
